I purchased a $299 walmart laptop at X-mas time lat year I believe. It is a Compaq V5305WM. It gets a excellent signal, 5 bars, from my Linksys befw11s4 v2.

A few weeks ago I purchased a Toshiba A135-S4527 from CC. It runs Windows Vista, which I don't care for. I can only get a two bar signal on it and get alot of drops, timeouts, and lockups while on the net. The Compaq is a wireless b, th Toshiba is a wireless b/g, the router is a wireless b. Would this make any difference?

Look at the wireless card drivers and see if you can force it to work as 802.11b only.

in the driver properties are options to select modes for many wireless cards.

I can find no place to force the wireless card to stay in 'b' mode. Under the advanced tab there is

  • 802.11b Preamble
    Network Address
    Receive Buffers
    Scan Valid Interval
    Transit Buffers

Is this where you mean? The only other tabs are General, Driver, Details, Resources, Power Management

I replaced my Linksys 'B' router with a Buffalo 'G' router and all is good now.
