Poor Video performance with Powerbook G4

OS X, all updates installed

Radeon 9000 64 mb

I have downloaded and installed UT2003 and Jedi Knight 2 demos. At default settings even the games run choppy and just unplayable...

If you want, I can run a UT2003 benchmark...

I have searched for updated drivers but I can't find any

Help ?

Does ATI's control panel on a mac have the same power saving features as on a pc laptop? Check and make sure powermizer (or something liek taht) is disabled. It gave me a ton of probs on my dell.

There is no control panel. All the settings that you would need to tweak should be exposed by the videogame options/preference menu though.

You said you had OS X with all the updates, but do you have OS X Jaguar (at least 10.2.5)? There were known problems with ATI cards and UT2003 with versions of OS X prior to 10.2.5. Additionally, I'd check to see if you have FSAA enabled. If so, disable it.

Something doesn't sound right. I know that the Powerbooks aren't the fastest gaming machines out there. But I would expect you could at least get smooth framerates out of it - especially on Jedi Knight. AnandTech is more PC-oriented. I would highly recommend posting this thread's question over at ArsTechnica's Macintosh Achaia Forum. They're very helpful and a lot more people will have your hardware configuration than over here.

Yeah, that's not right. One of my systems is a Powermac G4 DP 533 with a 32MB Geforce 2 MX. It runs Jedi Knight great, and it has maybe half the power of that Powerbook.

The demo they released of UT2003 is still beta. They fixed a a larger number of bugs in the final version and fixed bugs thst no one caught in the pc version. I would think the final version would run better.

Maybe because Macs suck at gaming and you should have bought a real computer? 😀

Seriously though - check for the PowerMizer settings. The R9000M clocks down when it's running off batteries - IIRC, down to something absurd like 80MHz.

I told him. 😛

The M9 in my i8200 will clock down to around 90Mhz when on batteries. But you should not be gaming on batteries anyway.

I should really reinstall windows on my notebook as well. I take it Apple filled your hdd with a lot of trash too.
