poor radeon 9800 pro performance

I'm not sure what you considered stomped, but every chart I just looked at had the 9800 beating the 5900. By at least 10-15fps.

Probably the last graph....It was obviously mislabeled though...switch "9500 Pro" and "9800 Pro" 😉 Although the 5900 still beats it at 1600x1200 4xAA...assuming they made the rest of the graph correctly. But really, would anyone run such high settings on a card like that? If it's 14fps vs. 22fps does it really matter? 😛

okay maybe a slight exaggeration on my part but the results between the 9800 pro and 5900 seem to be much closer than I remember seeing in older reviews.

Maybe it's improved with newer drivers? Maybe Pacific Fighters doesn't make much use of DX9 features? I really don't know (I've never heard of that particular game in the benchmarks you linked to)
 
Hard to trust that review at all, with the screw-up for the 9800pro on the 1600x1200 PF test, and what I suspect is the reversal of the 5900 and 9800pro results on all the HL-2 test (a 9800pro only 10-20% faster than a 9500pro in AA/AF modes? I don't think so). 😱

5xxx cards will always be faster than the 9xxx cards of the same tier in Half Life 2.
Remember, almost all reviews are using Ati 9xxx cards in DX9 mode and NV 5xxx cards in DX8.1 mode because of problems between the Source engine and The FX5xxx series.
