(I posted this topic in general hardware, but I found it better to repost it here)

I got a geforce 6800 a few days ago, and stuck it in my amd athlon xp 2500+ and 512 mb of ram. I was loving the game, it was great, but I started to get very..very angry at it..

I turned everything up to high, and it played smooth. but as soon as I entered areas with water, it started to dip. I turned it down to bilinier instead of tri, and it did fine. but I noticed it was pretty ugly. if I try to do 4x AF, it doesn't really hit frames, but AA seems to..the problem i'm having is lag online and offline, mostly around water (water hazard did fine, actully), or just overall. I was expecting to get atleast 60-70 fps on average with this rig (I noticed anandtech got 110 fps with my settings, but they were on an amd 4000+ with a gig of ram, so I sort of thought a bit lower). it's very dissapointing, and I don't want to have to turn down the effects, this is a $300 videocard! I don't like seeing my fps drop down to 30 on average..it's very sad.

as a side note, I checked my nvidia settings, checked my bios, and I used forceware drivers and 66.93 (forceware dips around water, and 66.93 dragged on certain parts..) and I always tried omega and beta.

am I screwed? I can't get a new processer or more ram for a few more months. games like doom 3 and farcry run great, but hl2 is sad :(

do high settings, no AA or AF. make sure you have motherboard drivers installed (go to run, dxdiag, select display tab, all 3 directx features enabled). otherwise, *shrugs*

You are bottlenecked by the cpu. More RAM would help too. Getting a huge video card won't give you super performance if the other pieces of your rig are lacking. Gaming uses all of it.

thanks. turning off AA/AF does help, and i had all features turned on. and the only drivers for my motherboard (A7N8X-X) are bios updates. the problem with turning off AA/AF is that stuff looks like crap from a distance. so I don't know what to do, turning it on lags me, but turning it off makes it smooth.
