Poor network performance

Hi all,

I have a home network at the moment that's performing very poorly.

Right now it's set up like this

Cable modem to Dlink DI-604 router.

The DI-604 router has all ports active. One LAN port is going to a Linksys router that is used by Vonage for VOIP. Two are going to two computers, and one is going to a 2nd VOIP device used by Sunrocket.

Performance is very poor with this setup. It's about 30Kb tops downloads on the computers. VOIP is suffering a great deal as well.

When the cable modem is just connected to a computer performance is at least 600Kb downloads.

If I replace the Dlink router with the Linksys router performance is at about that level. So it seems to be the Dlink router that can't handle things appropriately.

My question is - can anyone recommend a good router to replace the Dlink router with? I only need one with 4 ports. Basically I am looking for something with good performance, and maybe QOS so I can set higher priority to the LAN ports that go to the VOIP devices. If anyone is aware of a good router for this setup I'd really appreciate the advice! :)

Thanks!

You could go for a basic model like the one I have, Model BEFSR41. QoS is included.

EDIT: QoS Information added

I would say to go for a Linksys IMO

Hello,

Is there any particular model I should look at?

Linksys WRT54G.

I don't believe it supports QoS out of the box but there is probably some hacked firmware out there that will support this. Doing a quick Google search it looks like several other people are using this router w/ Vonage no problems. They setup QoS on a per-port basis. Here's an example of a thread where guys are talking about QoS on a WRT54G.
