POOR LINE-OF-SITE CONNECTION

I am unable to get good signal strength (only 1.2-2 bars) in a 10 foot line of site test. A Microsoft USB wireless adaptor on a different, adjacent unit works perfectly with router. This was also disconnected as a test.

Equipment: Linksys WMP54GS router as an access point and Linksys WMP54GS wireless nw card in remote CPU.

Settings: No encryption, SSID broadcast on, disabled "allow Windows to control connection" and "disabled Windows firewall", (all fire walls) disabled Norton Internet security package, REMOVED ALL OBVIOUS RF generating devices from room, reset router, reseated adaptor, tried 2 antennas and 2 cards, tried different slots, tried old router (WMP54G). Selected "join available networks" seemingly okay, terrible signal.

Norton Internet Security is included in the linksys driver package. Will installing The Norton stand alone package of the same name be an issue?

Aside from considering a repeater or high gain antenna on remote (if no connection in same room, those would be useless) and checking the router firmware level, I am stumped. This fix is mission critical.
Is there a laundry list of checks to make? Thanks!

Have you tried to hook up that MS USB adaptor to the machine that's having a problem to test it? Very possible that the wireless NIC in that machine has gone south - Broken antenna, etc.

or just changing channels? I've seen wireless flat not work because of interferrance from other stuff.
