Hey guys, so I got a new computer yesterday, a compaq SR1124NX (XP 2800+ Processor, 512 PC3200, 120 GB, integrated video) So I installed Nascar Racing 2003 Season, and set it to Direct3D at 640x480..even with all the settings at minimum, I get about 2 FPS. Hell, my old 500 MHz celeron PC played it better! Is there something that is disabled that is causing it to run this poorly? Integrated graphics shouldn't be that much of a bottleneck..

TIA

Well, not much. How could a mobo that's 5 years younger than my old one, perform worse? :|

Edit: Ok, so which place has the best prices? I don't have more than 50-75 bucks to spend..

get this at minimal, you will be able to get the same card (geforce4 TI4200) off of the forsale/trade forum and ebay for cheaper (around $60 for a 4200 128mb), but if you want to flat out buy it in a store. its gonna cost more. This is the minimal card i would reccomend. Your motherboard is younger, but the integrated video is poor.

Not to be rude, but thats a pretty outdated spec machine there man.. XP2800 is a 2Ghz CPU which i'm sure you know, I don't think anyone is still mislead by AMD's cheapass model numbering scheme.. Considering machines are well over 3Ghz, pushing 4Ghz, your behind the curve. You were grossly misled if you thought you'd buy a poor rig like that and rush home and play all of the latest and greatest games.

Second, your Integrated video card is useless. Totally useless..

Third, its a compaq, one of the worst computer companies known to man, so you probably have a very poor motherboard and cheap ram in it.. If not, i'd be shocked.. My experiances with compaq are bad.

Finally.. You probably have 200 things running in ram, further slowing you down. Kill all useless processes. Base, you should have say 18-20ish processes running in Task Manager at startup, if you got more, kill em off, and then try your games.

Before you rush out and buy a new video card, make sure you have an AGP slot. Some do not.

sorry buddy, not really followin ya here, I have my 2800+ oc'd to 3200+ speeds. You're missing the big picture here, cost/performance ratio. I paid $115 for my processor, how cheap can you get a 4 Ghz cpu for? ;)

A $50-$75 5200, GF4mx or 9000-9200 class video card would be better than integrated video. Theres nothing really all that wrong with your PC, just the integrated video. At newegg today you can get a couple of those cards for under $70...on the main page theres a GF4mx for $35 and a 9600SE for $65. If you're a heavy gamer then you will want a better card, but it doesnt sound like it.

Umm.. that's kind of a stupid statement. A 2800XP @ ~2GHz is not exactly "behind the curve." In fact, it's damn near in the best part of "the curve." AMD isn't trying to "mislead" anyone. Check some benchmarks sometimes. AMD's performance ratings are usually right on the mark, if not too conservative, when compared with Intel's parts. MHz mean nothing anymore, this isn't 1998. The only thing holding him back right now is a video card. My machine is nearly identical to his (not a Compaq, XP2600) with a R9600XT and plays Doom III @ 1024 just fine.

Lighten up. Don't let Intel's marketing hype cloud your vision too much. You don't need some Intel P4 3.4GHz EE, 2MB cache, $900+ CPU to play games. A $65, XP2600 one will perform just fine...

One thing though, guys..on the PNY website for the ti4200, it says a 350W PS is minimum...I think this computer only has a 250W PS. I'm guessing that would lead to problems?

That can't be right. I've had a 4200 in a Dell 400SC, and that only has like a 250W power supply. 350W is almost as high as the suggested power supply for the 6800GT/Ultra.

From PNY's website,

Minimum System Requirements
350 Watt power supply

But i'll trust you that it should work ;)

If that box came with a 250M power supply, i'd be boxing it back up right now and taking it back.. Thats truely BS a company would ship that kind of thing, and i'd be pissed off bad.
