Poor DVD picture quality

Just picked up the portable DVD player for sale at CompUSA, but I notice the DVD's I'm watching all seem really grainy on it. Is that just how DVD's look on an LCD, or does the DVD player just have a crappy screen?

I'm thinking about getting a Toshiba portable DVD player (if this one doesn't work out), anyone have experience with those?

Does the unit have video out? Connect it to the TV and find out if its the player. If the picture looks ok on the TV screen then its the LCD. If its the LCD nothing much you can do but to replace the whole unit

I'm not really concerned about the video out.... I wanted the setup because it was portable. Do all portables have a grainy look to them, or just this one? If it's this one, I'll return it and get a better quality one.

Fuzzy? If you take a movie where there is a constant color background, there is some "noise" in the color, something like the noise you see on a TV station that isn't getting reception. I've not really seen DVD's played on LCD's before, so I'm not sure if the artifacts I'm seeing are due to the MPEG encoding, or the DVD player's decoding.
