Poor British

Is it me or choppers are VERY unsafe?

In a wartime enviornment in the desert, they'll have some trouble. Bad things happen, you just have to deal with it. Just be glad you are not an Iraqi, they have lots more to mourn than the US/UK.

I can't imagine that flying a helicopter is any harder than landing a jet on a carrier at night.

Eh, depends. Choppers fly lower, and are more affected by weather. Weather over land, especially in the desert is more unpredictable and hazordous then over water. You can't have a sand storm cause your engines to ingest sand and crap out on you over water for instance... Air currents are more predictable because the air over the water is generally all the same temperature and thus more apt to rise have steady currents, while over land warm air pockets and cold air pockets form.

It's war. People die. Why are some people surprised by this revelation?

That being said, the Brits are having some hard luck. Over a dozen dead and not one because of enemy fire. The unsubstantiated Patriot might turn out to be the pilot's fault -- no way to tell at this point.

Isn't Patriot suppose to DEFEND, not attack?

LOL, poor British.

Yes, but the British jet was reportedly taking a flight path out of Iraq, back towards Kuwait that was very similar to the path of the missles shot at Kuwait the other day. The Patriot battery might have confused the single jet with another Iraqi missile. That is the information I read at least. Unfortunately, as many have said, death and accidents are a normal part of war.

🙁

People might just se Tony Blair in a weaker light, following Bush like a sheep and take pity on him, might not all be over yet.

Right, well someone was obviously in control of the patriot that was shot... considering there is almost no possiblity of Iraqi planes in the sky, and a plane should be distringuishable from a missle... pretty bad. The British have lost a lot in the war already, more than a dozen.

Tony Blair's career is over.

I think he's going to suffer greatly. He was in enough trouble when they initially became involved with the war.

also according to some news source (forgot where) during that time there were over 1500 bombing missions so there were alot of planes flying over

They are reporting that all allied jets have a transponder broadcasting a certain signal so the missle batteries know they are friendlies. It could have been that the British jet's transponder was not functioning for whatever reason. The fact is, mistakes happen in war. Equipment breaks, soldiers make mistakes...sad but a fact. It's probably wise to wait for all the facts to come out...

Choppers are very unsafe by design. They air-foil or wings of a chopper are the blades. They have the ability to pitch to the right or left, forward or back with a slight movement of the stick. This means that in rough conditions, any flex or tension on the blades can change pressure and cause the pilot to have less and less control over the helicopter.
