Poor Bastards

What moron would compare a $150 video card to a $500 Ultra? They are in completely different classes, performance and price wise

Yeah,

Giants may be for the GTS. However try a new Flight Sim with Full FSAA with both cards and tell me:

1) Which looks better,
2) Which plays faster (more FPS),
3) Which plays at a higher resolution while keeping playable FPSs,

Huh?? Huh??

I thought so!!

They are different cards, in different classes and a comparison of this kind is unfair!

Leave it to a 'member' to think up this tripe!!

Edblor

And if you consider this thread cr@pping, deal with it?? His title says it all!! Gheesh

I wanna see the screenshots of the flight sim. I dont think it would look that tight compared to the GTS. Yes I am very proud to smoke as much weed as I can everyday. I try to keep my oxygen/thc input to at least 50/50 throughout the day.

Flight sims are typically CPU bound so an ultra-fast video card gains you little with them. Flight sims also benefit from FSAA which in addition to reducing jaggies also fixes pixel popping effects. 3dfx's FSAA is better than nvidia's and less problematic. Thus, Voodoo5 does not suck for flight sims (or any other cpu-limited title) where FSAA is desired.

How can you honestly think of 3Dfx being bought out by Nvidia as a good thing? Has that herb ate more braincells than you think?

Competition = good

High prices = bad

I rest my case 🙂

im sorry but i still have a soft spot for the old sli voodoo2 8 megger ... it broke my little hymen in the world of 3d graphics..

GrimReefer, you need to cut back on the weed.

PlioTronX: 3dfx was going down the tubes anymore, they couldn't compete. If NVIDIA hadn't bought most of its assets, it would have gone completely bust. Or maybe ATI would have bought it. But 3dfx wasn't going to survive much longer. The only competition to NVIDIA now is ATI.

Competition in this genre of hardware, at such incredibly high prices already, is very good in terms of cutting down the cost. But when the competition starts to decline so rapidly that one company starts monopolizing the market, then the declining company either goes bankrupt and dies or gets inhaled by the monopoly, just as the case with 3dfx and nVidia. The first 3d card I ever had was the Diamond Viper powered by the insanely fast Riva 128 (oooh). Then for years I was a customer of 3dfx, first buying my old school Voodoo. I bought every incarnation of the Voodoo chipset thereafter, except for the 4 and 5. I was very disapointed to hear that Voodoo was dieing as a company, but if you can't keep up in this industry, thats what happens. Its a damn shame these cards aren't cheaper, but seriously, how long do you think nVidia will dominate? How much longer until another company comes rocketing out of Silicon Valley?

Hey peeps,

I am the guy responsible for that screenshot comparison.

Yep. Little ole me.

Lets get a few things out in the open real quick-like.

I did that comparison to support an assertion I was making about graphically rich gaming environments reducing the number of disconnects your brain makes when fighting off total immersion. I did not do it to compare a discontinued $150 card vs. the the all-powerful wallet-draining megalith that is the GeForce2 Ultra. I didn't do it to ruin the experience that Voodoo5 owners have. I also didn't do it to fake anyone out, or show off my mad photoshop skillz. I simply did it to recreate the experience I had at a lan party, where I had the opportunity to see identical machines (sans video adapter) running the exact same game with DRASTIC differences in overall visual quality.

I love the Voodoo5 I have, and until I had seen Giants on the GF2Ultra, I had absolutely ZERO bitches with it. Even now, I am not bitching about the Voodoo5 (whats the point in that?) but I am giving some credit where credit is due. If game developers (like planet moon) take the time to write for the additional features of the GF2 line of cards, it is capable of producing very rewarding effects.

I was (and still am) a total V5 fan when it was introduced because of the immersive benefits of it's fine FSAA. Check my review of it if there is any question (http://fullon3d.com/reports/voodoo5-5500/)

To Voodoo Owners: DO NOT ENJOY YOUR CARDS... ENJOY YOUR GAMES. After all, who cares what other people say. If you are able to walk away from your machine having thoroughly enjoyed your game then your 3d accelerator is doing it's job perfectly.

To GF2 Owners: DO NOT ENJOY YOUR CARDS... ENJOY YOUR GAMES. Sound familiar? If so, why are you reading other people's mail? That was specifically addressed to VOODOO OWNERS. Just like a GeForce Owner to be prying like that... 😀 On the serious tip.. BUY GIANTS. It is one of the few games out there that totally showcases your cards power and it is a scream to boot. Just remember, even if you shelled out 500 smacks, there are instances in which the V5 is a superior card (low-res high FSAA situations typically).

Remember folks, it is all about the GAME. The game is the reason our cards are as powerful as they are today and why they will be more powerful tomorrow. I love video cards, but only in that they make it easier for me to love my games.

and I am out....

heh, that Rampage would have wasted the NV20!

too bad nVidia bought 3dfx, their war was the most interesting I've seen in a while.. stupid president, selling out becuase he's in it for the money, not the company, or the end user..

You see, the voodoo 5 is starting to crumble now. Older games that have been released in the past year run great on the voodoo 5. But now, with new games that exploit the geforce and radeon's extra features, we see which cards are really the most future proof. The radeon and geforce will both be able to last longer than the voodoo 5. Voodoo 5 only performs good on the stupid ass old games that were optimized for glide and voodoo chipsets. However its direct 3d performance is pretty good too, but it's open gl aint that great. Plus to see the full benefit of v5 you need at least a 700 or higher mhz cpu.
