Three decades of football, monster-truck jams, rock and roll music and hosting the superstars of politics and religion will end next February when the Pontiac Silverdome shuts it doors.
The era began with a preseason football game on Aug. 23, 1975, when the Detroit Lions beat the Kansas City Chiefs, 27-24, at the 80,000-seat stadium that still didn't have a roof.
It will end on Feb. 4, when one of the teams in next year's Super Bowl takes to the dome's artificial turf to practice for the game Feb. 5 at Ford Field in Detroit.
After that, the Silverdome will have no more trade shows, heavy metal tours or roller-blading extravaganzas.
"It's probably a little bit overdue," said Pontiac City Councilman John Bueno, who has been on a committee negotiating the future use of the Silverdome property, which is considered one of the most valuable pieces of property in Michigan. "It probably should have occurred sooner."

My most memorable Silverdome experience was seeing The Who's farewell concert in September of '82. Festival seating, lots of fights, puke, smoke, urine, and horrible accoustics. Geeze, I'll really miss that place...
