Pontiac Silverdome will be closed forever...

Analog

Lifer
Three decades of football, monster-truck jams, rock and roll music and hosting the superstars of politics and religion will end next February when the Pontiac Silverdome shuts it doors.

The era began with a preseason football game on Aug. 23, 1975, when the Detroit Lions beat the Kansas City Chiefs, 27-24, at the 80,000-seat stadium that still didn't have a roof.

It will end on Feb. 4, when one of the teams in next year's Super Bowl takes to the dome's artificial turf to practice for the game Feb. 5 at Ford Field in Detroit.

After that, the Silverdome will have no more trade shows, heavy metal tours or roller-blading extravaganzas.

"It's probably a little bit overdue," said Pontiac City Councilman John Bueno, who has been on a committee negotiating the future use of the Silverdome property, which is considered one of the most valuable pieces of property in Michigan. "It probably should have occurred sooner."

My most memorable Silverdome experience was seeing The Who's farewell concert in September of '82. Festival seating, lots of fights, puke, smoke, urine, and horrible accoustics. Geeze, I'll really miss that place...

🙁

Went to a Supercross race there, back in like 1997 when McGrath still rode Honda. A leg of the track actually went way up in a corner of the stadium. It was turbo sweet.

Been there twice, as I recall.

The first time for a Michigan Panther playoff game. Remember the USFL? 🙂

Then once for a Lions game.

Nothing too memorable about it though.

I was at many a Lions game, including the 1997 Thanksgiving Day game where Barry ran circles around the Bears and the Lions won 55-20.

I agree that it probably should have been scrapped a long time ago.

I've been there once for a game a few years ago. It's definately aging and needed to either be torn down or renovated. Considering the Lions don't play there anymore, it would be silly to renovate it.

1981

The Rolling Stones with opening acts Santana and Iggy Pop...

I "think" I had a great time...at least I was told I did

oh, and I forgot to mention - the inadequate bathrooms. I remember the women were peeing in the guy's bathroom sinks at that concert.

I did too, but it was in the early 90s. Remember Honda or some other Japanese carmaker was sponsoring the event. The Detroit crowd was not too pleased when the brought out the vehicle and announced it.

every stadium built between about 1960 and 1992 was crap (with the exception of kaufman in KC). and that includes the rebuilt yankee stadium in 1976

when i was a wee gal, my mom took my brother and i to "roll at the dome"! thats where we first learned to roller blade! we also say the circus along time ago.
Its kind of an eye sore now though.

Terrible acoustics.
Saw Aerosmith, Uncle Ted, Foghat, and the Outlaws there in '75
Never went back for a concert.

Saw many a game.

Most people don't believe me when I tell them that they used drive a small tractor on the roof. I was watching a game when I saw the shadow of the thing go by with 4 guys walking with it. They probably used it to clean the roof and clear off the snow.

so what about all the streets and things that are named after the silverdome? Our HQ is on Silverdome Industrial Parkway. Do they name it the parkway formerlly known as Silverdom Industrial Parkway?

Hulk Hogan bodyslamming Andre the Giant in the middle of the Silverdome at Wrestlemania III was one of my all time favorite moments as a kid (wasn't there live though, just saw it on TV)

Wow. No more Silverdome?!

My first time there was to watch my Dad's friend in a huge demolition derby. Went to a Monster Truck show of some sort during the original Big Foot era, and of course saw my first Lions game at the 'dome. Pretty sure I went to some motocross stuff there too.

I'll never forget watching Barry Sanders break an ~80 yard run there as the Lions beat the Packers 27-24 - not sure which year that was. Favre got picked off 2 or 3 times during the game.

My Dad went to Wrestlemania 3 there - the one where Hogan slammed Andre. He was on ground level and said seeing Andre walk out of the tunnel was one of the most amazing things he has ever seen.

Awww, I was wondering when they'd close it...about time though. At least I'll catch a few movies at the double-feature drive-in this summer. And some concert's bound to go through there...Warped Tour was there last year, in the parking lot.

My best memory...hard to say, but probably the Metallica Summer Sanitarium tour 2 summers ago (or was it last?)
