What should I do with it?

I have pile if pretty good sized Pomegranate logs - I'm tempted to dry them and use them in my BBQ smoker. I have no idea what flavor these would give to meat or veggie, but I don't want to kill anyone. :D

For the tree huggers out there, I had an Arborist come out after it started leaning over in March. Apparently the root ball was rotting, it was a 40+ year old bush/tree and had reached the limit of its useful life.

I was going to put all of it out for yard waste, but the wood seemed like it might be good for burning/smoking.

Does the wood have too much tannin in it to use for cooking/smoking?

Id treat it like any fruit wood and use where that is appropriate. It cant hurt. As long as its dry and not moldy/rotten. I'd remove the bark as they have high tannin levels. try it with something neutral like chicken or even cheese etc...

Yeah, that's what I was thinking too. Thanks for the feedback.

I'm not familiar with the characteristics of that wood but it might be valuable to local woodworkers. How big are the logs?

Biggest ones are only a 4" in diameter. Pomegranate trees are pretty spindly, so not really useful for most woodworking. One of my neighbors has made some wooden spoons and forks with it though. :D

Pen turners sometimes use it.

It should be fine to use if you remove all bark first. The bark produce toxic fumes.

I used to use Grape wood and Apple wood to smoke and loved the flavors they added but IMO
Pecan wood > * for smoking

I mostly smoke apple and/or hickory, just because I have a bunch of it laying around. Pecan tastes pretty much like hickory, doesn't it?
