Gee, I wonder who won...
rolleye.gif

Cuban President Fidel Castro hailed the election as a shining example of democracy, while dissidents denounced the polls as a farce.

After casting his vote, Mr Castro said the election was "a response to the empire in its efforts to destroy the revolution," in a veiled reference to the United States.

With no opposition, the result is a foregone conclusion.

There are exactly the same number of seats as there are candidates - all of whom are selected by government-approved bodies.

Hmm, some democracy...

Castro must of used same democracy as Saddam. They both didn't have any opposition because they are so good at their job.

Actually, all the opponents are killed off.

I would say that if the people had a choice between two candidates, they'd still choose Castro. A lot of the Cuban people actually like Castro.

yeah, and I heard that elian gonzalez's father was one of the candidates. Castro is a true reactionary. It's pathetic how everything he does is in response to the U.S..

If you're the only person who runs for an elected position [You run as the sole canidate] and win, is that not democratic? I'm curious as I've seen people run for election in student governements as the sole canidate, because no one was able to get enough signatures from the student body to run.

LOL! Of course you're kidding, I'm sure... ;)

Hopper

BTW, on the off chance you're actually serious, do you honestly believe no one in the entire country of Cuba wanted to run for office?

I'll give you a hint. Those running for office are picked by the government and only they can run. No one else is allowed to be on the ballot.

Come on Zim Hosein. How the phuk can every candidate be the sole candidate? Must be a huge coincidence or maybe that's how the dictator likes it.

I see your point w/ your original post Hopper, but I was seriously asking my question, because if you use the analogy of a student government, yes, I'm sure there are plenty of people who want to run for government, but since they are picked by the government, IE "nominated," they will not be able to be on the ballot.

<--Done w/ my long run-on sentence

In the case of Hopper's post about Cuba, I agree that there is no way a coincidence like that can occur, but in the case of a student government in school, what do you think?

What does decepit mean? I'm curious as I'm not sure what word you meant.

People complain about problems in the United States too, but NO ONE tries to swim to Cuba.

Take the red pill, quick! :D

Only so much as I can count on the fingers on one hand. But that doesn't change the fact that the guy has run his country into the gound and anyone supporting him is either living off the people's backs or just stupid.

Let me ask you a question....

Why do you think Castro didn't have any opposition for this election?

Is it because he is doing a such job that opponents knew that they didn't have a chance against Castro?

Or

Is it possible that his oppositions were afraid of being jailed/killed if they ran against Castro?
