[POLL]Your overall opinion on MTV. Yay, nay, or eh... READ MY POST FIRST

I just got to reading a little bit on the whole Janet Jackson exposure thread that has caused some very heated debates. Both sides of the coin are bringing up some good points, but I believe that nearly everybody agreed that the MTV-produced superbowl half-time show was crap.

Which got me to thinking -- what is everybody's HONEST opinion of MTV and the overall image/message that it portrays? Is our society and culture better enriched because of the diverse and open lifestyle of MTV, or is our society and culture being destroyed because of the vapid and dishonest lifestyle of MTV?

My answer to that question -- I'm personally think that MTV is a cancer to our society. No good has come about because of it. Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake may have shocked the world by exposing Janet's boob, but I am even more shocked by how meaningless and false the MTV lifestyle is, and how the children of today are being exposed it. The music -- or whatever music is on it -- sucks. The Real World is NOT The Real World. More than one person has died from imitating the pointless stunts of Jackass. Women are impossibly thin and beautiful, WELL above the status quo. The lifestyle of "bling bling," hoes, and cars are attainable by only the super rich and superficial. The Osbournes are, well... the Osbournes.

I mean, it's just NOT WHAT LIFE IS ALL ABOUT.

Be completely honest with yourself -- do you think the world would REALLY be a better place without MTV? I do -- to a large degree.

Or one of the other MTV channels like MTV2.

MTV is geared towards adolescents. Not very intelligent ones at that. Everything is sex based and soap opera driven.

There have been some votes for leaving MTV alone. Why? I need somebody to contribute an arguement against mine, please. Educate me! 🙂

MTV is a vehicle used by Corporate America to influence todays youth. How else can you explain the popularity of such uninspiring Musical Artists today. Come on, Hey Ya by Outkast considered a great song?? LOL. Also Spears, Timberlake and the rest of the happy crap topping the charts.

MTV does have some worth in our society as Music Television. But as some pointed out, it really isn't that. What does The Real World have to do with music? Nothing. Alot of the shows on it are superficial and promote a very materialistic, selfish lifestyle. Which isn't good. But of course there is the old argument, if you don't like it, change the channel.

I myself watch MTV Hits because it is non-commercial interrupted music videos. Most of the videos are garbage, but at least it IS music.

Don't you have better things to do in your life than listen to garbage? 😕

"eh...". MTV is about as important as artichoke dips to me. It's OK. Nothing special. Doesn't add anything to my life. Sometimes it'll surprise me, and sometimes it's just boring.

obviously i don't watch the garbage videos. i didn't say i watch it continuously. besides, its good to be exposed to music you don't like. you should figure out why exactly you don't like it.

MTV is crap. Videos are such a large contribution to music sucking.

Another thing is the image. I really didn't believe in rolemodels and messages on TV that much until recently.

I do a lot of work in rural areas of central NY. Places that have villages of less than 1000 people, and towns with only double digit numbers of roads.
When I go through these areas I see kids who think they are thugs. Rockin' the jeans off their ass, sideways hats, huge ugly coats, and walking with a slight pimp limp.
I see these kids walking down country roads, in 3 feet of snow. They should be driving pickup trucks, snowmobiles, and having a dog or 3 follow them around.

Hello kids, you're not a thug, you're not from the ghetto, hell you're not even from a CITY!

LOL! Pimp limp.

But it's so true. There are so many wanna be "gangsta thugs" around here too. You just want to jack them upside the head and tell them "YOU ARE IN BUM FSCK IOWA!" I'd love to take these posers and dump them in some of the shadier parts of Chicago and Detroit and see if they still want to portray the same image/attitude.

I believe I can recognize talent and then recognize over-produced garbage. I'm sure SOMETHING out on MTV has artistic merit, but I'm not gonna take the time to wallow in filth to find it, especially when -- honestly -- I'm really not that interested.

If that means that I miss out on some great pop/rock/rap music, all I can say is "oh well." I'll catch them in 30-40 years when they're being played on "oldies" stations. As for right now, there are plenty of other genres with plenty of great music that's worth listening to. I'll go in that direction instead.

MTV was great when they played music videos. When i was stationed in Germany 89-92 people on my flight (platoon) would have their friends or family tape MTV for us to watch when locked in a Alert Fire Team building for 12 hours.

Now MTV just plays crap. I dont think the head dudes at MTV know where they want go with their lineup's.

MTV began transforming into Sh!t TV when it decided that music videos were only secondary to it's other craptastic programming. I rarely watch it anymore with the noted exceptions of Punk'd and Boiling Point which I think is hilarious. If Boiling Point could move to another station I would not shed a tear if MTV disappeared.

Do you let your kids watch playboy? Do you let them watch porn? I personally enjoy the shows on MTV, does that make me a bad person? If you don?t like it don?t watch it. There are many things in this world and on tv that influence young people and older people. If you think those kids died from watching jackass you might be right, and then you also might think everyone that died from a gunshot was Clint Eastwoods fault. That?s my thought.

Just because I don't like it doesn't mean the world would be a better place without it. Obviously that's a slippery propsition. If we get into making morality based decisions for programming, where will it lead?

I exercise my right to not watch it, additionally I express my opinion on the subject to my children and make sure they understand my reason's for disliking it.

I will admit to watching my fair share of MTV...but it can get really sickenign at times. I never thought I would get to this point, but when I see/hear the people on a lot of these shows...it really makes my stomach turn. I don't even think the word superficial fully encompases it.

There was some show called sex2k or something like that. Basically it was about how to get laid and it was pathetic. They were following guys mostly in Miami (the superficial capital of the US IMHO...and yes I have spent much time there). All the guys could talk about is how they had to buy expensive clothes, shoes, watches, cars, cologne, etc. so that they can get laid. And then the girls they were trying to hook up with were beyond slutty. Don't get me wrong...they were very pretty...but disgustingly flaunthing themselves. The only thing more disgusting was the guys...who cared more about their looks than if they had anything of any responsibility to do the next day (a Wednesday).

Maybe I'm getting too old... at age 25.

Toward progress. Less rebellion against parents from teens who don't know what they're missing from so-called "life". Less teenage sexual relationships. Less outrageous fashion. Less bad music. Less deaths from stupid stunts.

Less is more.
