I didn't start drinking before I was 21 and around that time I was 160~ 5'8 and I could eat what I wanted with no working out. Now after a year of drinking I fluctuate weight badly and am around 177 now. BUT, the research I've done indicates there is no correlation between drinking and weight gain.

Yes, they are empty calories and yes you can say calories in - calories out but it seems to be more complicated than that, as the body burns the calories different or more efficienty according to a couple of studies I read.

So, off to ATOT to get a consensus.

Yes I gained weight after I started drinking.

'bout 20 lbs and running so far (sips beer).

I definitely gained weight after I started drinking. Then again for a while I was drinking a lot of dark beer very often.
Luckily I've lost all the gained weight and then some.

well its not just the drinks, metabolism slows in general so you gotta be careful. you can only eat like a human dumpster before you reach the 20s

It probably is one of those things where two things happen concurrently, but lack a cause and effect relationship.
People who tend to drink a lot of beer are probably also prone to have poorer health habits in general, which would leave them disposed to gain weight more easily from the additional calories from the alcohol.

Any other changes in your diet since 21? Do you get the drunken munchies after drinking?

And to those who voted that you lost weight, did you drink so much that it became a new form of bulimia or something

That could be a potential factor. Those late night burritoes, cheeseburgers and pizza add up :)

Voted that i have gained weight, although it is deceiving. A lot of weight is normally gained between 15 and 21....

Living with women caused me to gain weight, but not drinking cause me to lose weight... I don't know if it's a correlation, but i thought i would share.

I lost weight because I could only afford to eat OR drink, but most people I know gain weight. Previous posters mentioned drunken munchies but don't forget other unhealthy habits such as sleep deprivation and dehydration that will cause you to gain weight.
