Something reminded me of the time someone I know (asian) who got offended when a caucasian old lady wanted to say something to my friend about the product on the shelf... but she started off saying "do you speak english?" My friend got offended right away and told her off. A bit of an overreaction in my mind, but IF YOU DID NOT LOOK NATIVE to this country and got asked this, would you get offended in the first place?

I think the other reaction to it would be OMG I do, cause I'm awesome!

no, old ladies are usually super sweet, i wouldn't assume she meant to offend... she comes from a different generation, i'd give her the benefit of the doubt when it comes to social graces involving race, to an extent.

so no i wouldn't be offended but i'm not saying your friend didn't have a right to be either.

Man there is so much fun you could have at that ladys expense. Why get offended when you could say "No I do not speak English," in perfect English, or put on a fake asian accent: "Herro!", or like hiro says, just say no in any langauge and walk away.

I deal with the public a lot in my profession, and you would LOL to know how much I get that.
