Poll: Would you "defraud" Dell over a $2K plasma tv?

Dell wouldn't eat the loss, they would ding the shipping company and send it back to the manufacturer for repair. The shipper wouldn't incur any costs because Dell wouldn't be able to prove that they damaged the product. Ultimately the manufacturer would repair it at their cost of about $300 and send it back out to be sold again.

If you read the OP's posts closely you would have noted that he pulled the carton off the top of the unit and it tipped over, causing the damage. I sounded to me like it was poor packing design on the part of the manufacturer. Why should he suck up a $2000 loss because of poor package engineering?

In answer to your question, NONE OF THE ABOVE, because they are all wrong reasons. The ultimate fault lies with the manufacturer and they should take the hit, not the unsuspecting consumer who trusted them to pack their plasma TV in such a way that it wouldn't tip over when they removed the box that it was shipped in.

Just cause you would say its a shipping damage doesnt mean that you would do it in fs/ft. Read the whole thread. If that happened to me I would say it was damaged while shipping it. But I would NEVER do that to a person on this forum or any site I would sell something. These are two very different things.

why is there a difference? Who is to say you cant claim that a shipper dropped a HDD you bought on FS/T when you, in fact, did it?

First thing I would do is call up my homeowners insurance provider and see if I can't write it off on that policy minus the deductable.

Then try and ebay off the plasma screen for whatever I could get out of it hopefully making up the difference.

Kramer: These big companies, they write everything off.
Jerry: You don't even know what a write off is, do you?
Kramer: No, do you?
Jerry: No!
Kramer: But they do, and they're the ones writing it off.

I wouldn't spend $2000 on a TV if $2000 was a lot of money to me... I'd call Dell and explain what happened, and whatever is not covered by Dell I'd get from AMEX.

Theft is theft folks.

If you can rationalize defrauding Dell because they are "rich" and "can afford it" -- millions of people poorer than you can rationalize defrauding you because to them, you are "rich" and "can afford it."

You've just advocated a system of ethics that allows people to rip YOU off.

Not only this, but fraud costs EVERYONE. Companies pass the cost of fraud onto the consumer.

In this case, I decline comment - I can't tell if it's crappy packaging (The TV tipped over in the process of removing it) or some genius screwing up and trying to justify what happened.

Or maybe the TV just sucks - should not be THAT easy to knock over somthing THAT expensive.

Let's try to keep the logic to a minimum here ok :)

How is it that the mods even allow a thread like this to stay open? I mean if it was damged in shiping then send it back. But in this case it was not. Sending it back to Dell would be fraud which is illegal. I don't care what you do. I prolly would try to send it back myself. I would just think the mods would have a problem with this thread, guess nto though. But then again I would be very careful if I ever bought a 2000.00 dollar TV

Some genius screwed up while taking it out of the box. However, he told Dell the truth and they are going to help him out.

I would call Dell and tell them what happened.

They may choose to fix it for a reduced rate or maybe even free for customer service. Does your credit card have loss abd damage protection? That would be choice two.

The bottom line is lieing to get something is stealing.

Read the other thread. He did tell Dell the truth (his brother made him do it, I think) and they are going to help him out.
