A bit of background:

I've been at my job for fourteen months. I'm respected, I do a good job, and I get along with my boss. I work from 315pm-1145pm M-F. It's an office job.

I also attend school from 8am-2pm. I'm currently in summer semester (duh), which is a 15-day semester. Each class meeting is about three hours long and covers a large amount of accelerated material.

The people at my job are very well aware that I go to school during the day. They understand that I simply cannot attend any early function or come in early.

For some reason, they have scheduled me to attend a two-day 8am-5pm seminar next Wednesday and Thursday. I told them that I cannot go, and they said that I needed to and started talking about how much they spent to reserve me a spot (everyone from my project is going.)

I explained how important it was that I go to class. I would miss two chapters in both of my classes. This is unacceptable. My 8am teacher told me that the would allow me to miss, but only if it was unavoidable. I'm only allowed to miss two days, and she was not happy.

So here I am. I have to make a decision. I have plenty of karma at work (I won't get fired or anything), but rocking the boat is a bad thing. I don't want to miss class, taking a low grade that will hurt my GPA.

I told them that I would take the books from the two day class home and read, but they still want me to attend the class.

What would you do? I'm leaning towards school.

but for some reason, it seems that they don't.

to be honest, i'd go with what you like better. if you'd rather be in a seminar, then fine. if not, then go to class. if you are concerned for your grade, then go to class. maybe you can attend the seminar one day and class the other.

Don't do it - I have let work interfere with school too many times, and I have done nothing but screw myself everytime.

If they're aware of your educational obligations, they shouldn't have sheduled you for the seminars - someone screwed up on their end.

That's what I think that it was. Just an error by someone who signed everyone from my project up for the class. It did kind of piss me off that they mentioned the price of the class ($900). I said that $900 was about the cost of my summer classes, and if someone has to lose $900, I'd rather it be them than me. ;)

lol - yeah - better they bear the burden of their mistake. I learned the lesson the hard way, with dropped classes and bad grades.

I voted for school, but after reading the OP, I'd have to say that it depends on the class.

I had some classes in college where I could blow off 50% of the semester and still pull an A; I also had classes where if I missed a single class, I'd be fvcked for the semester.

There are mandantory attendance requirements in Mississippi. I can only miss two days without getting a forced WF.

They signed you up knowing it would be difficult to attend. Their mistake, not yours.
Go to school.

Chaotic I can't believe it's been almost a year and a half since you moved back, man! Tough situation you're in there. I have to say class is more important when it comes down to it. They made a mistake and you did nothing wrong so you shouldn't have to suffer from their error.

Don't screw up your long-term plans to make things easier in the short-term. Tell your boss you're sorry, but you just can't miss your classes. Next time, he'll remember to check with you before he makes plans.

School is more important than work. They fvcked up. Don't let work fvck up your schooling. I let my work interfere with my schooling, and I have the W's to show for it :(.

We worked out a deal. The seminar got extended to three days (W-F), I'll miss class on Thursday for the seminar, and I don't have school on Friday.
