I've got Win98SE right now. I've been thinking of upgrading but from what I've heard from others I'm not so sure. What do you guys think? Thanks. :)

I personally don't like it, it's too bloated with stuff you may never use. Thus slows down performance. Also I like having good old DOS ;)

Win ME is yet another MS crappy OS.
If you like win98, that one is for you.
Otherwise, stay away from it.

Win Me... I have to agree with Tharyn, it's filled with stuff that most people arn't going to use.

Truly the worst Microsoft has done, if you must upgrade and you should, go with Win2K, best OS Microsoft has ever done.

If you have a pretty solid install of win98se now, do not screw yourself by "upgrading" to WinME. WinMe has all of the bugs of 95 (1st version) in a Win2000 like shell. If win98 is giving you problems, go with Windows 2000, you will not be sorry. Yesterday I finally got around to wiping my son's HD clean of that psuedo OS (WinME)and put 98se back on. I just thank the almighty that I didn't pay a dime for winME (no, I didn't pirate it), otherwise I would have been really pissed.

Well, i'm the flip side of this coin. I'm running WinMe and love it. It hasn't slowed me down a bit (that i can tell). The 'bloated' stuff people keep mentioning, well, that's just more toys for me to play with. It stable, for me too. My only complaint is that Creativelabs hasn't released the drivers for the Webcam 3 yet. They were 3 months late with them after Win2K was released. Everything else works perfectly.

If Win98SE is working fine - leave well enough alone. If you are starting fresh, WinME has not been a problem in the 100+ clean installs and upgrades I have done. It has even let me know about update issues with existing software before proceeding (certain revisions of BlackIce, HP Scan software, etc.). I do miss the DOS though and the convoluted way you have to get to it. Win2k pro is the bomb as long as all of your hardware meets compatibility testing - some NT4 drivers work and some don't. Good luck in your choice.

I'd stick with Win 2000 if I had a choice. The only reason I am not doing that is 'coz Win 2000 doesn't use my audio drivers for my Turtle II Montego. I tried removing the current win 2000 provided drivers and installing NT drivers but that doesn't work. I have no problem using win 2000 drivers except that in Win ME or Win 98 I just have to turn up the volume 3 notches and my speakers roar. With Win 2000, I have to pretty much turn it up all the way to make my speakers play stuff loud.
Advise?

I thought i like it, i was wrong.

I went through it with a file checker and removed 2 GIG!! of bloat after 3 weeks on my system.

What happened to my old CD Player? Now I get this crappy WMP7 coming up every time I put in a CD, and sometimes it won't even start automatically so I have to fumble around to play it. Anyone know if you can get the old one back?

Other than that (plus a few minor quirks) I'm satisfied with the WinME upgrade. I've seen a noticeable performance boost from Win98 first edition

Perhaps I am the only person here that supports WinMe. I think I have tried just about every operating system out there and from my point of view, it was faster and better than 98SE.

If you do make the plunge, make sure you have WinMe drivers for everything and you don't have a scsi card and burner...I have problems with both!

It has problems with your SCSI and burner but its good? hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

I guess I could see if it was a totally new OS.... but it isnt... Ill never figure out why devices work in 98 but not ME when its basically the same OS... well with new bugs.

I have WinME and all I use it for is watching DVD movies.

The ICS is a billion times better than the ICS in Win98SE too.

It also boots a lot faster.

I don't understand people's problems with WinMe. I have installed it on a ton of machines and it is ENTIRELY stable on each one. I don't have to reboot everday like I do with win98 (in fact I have had my machine(s) up an drunnign for several days (4+) with heavy usage and not needed to reboot).

As with ANY OS, if you know how to use/configure it properly it shoudl be jsut fine.

The only "issue" I havehad is some lack of drivers but after they were released by the respective manufacturer all was well.

I love WinME and would NEVER go back to Win98SE
