If there's ever going to be a reason for me to get off my butt and install one o' the Linux distros that I have lying around, this is it.

MS's gone too far this time, methinks.

I do not see XP going on any of my machines if that garbage is part of it.

It seems to me that alot of people are worried about invasion of privacy. My concern is trying to use the damn software in 5 years. I don't want to have to get MS's permission to use something I paid for when I know they're gonna say "It's old, upgrade"

My prediction: Windows XP will be cracked, packaged, and ready for ISO release 3 days BEFORE the official release.

Demon points out something that the press has overlooked with this "improvement". You KNOW M$ is going to stop activation at some point to push Windows 2005 or whatever it is. It wouldn't surprise me in the least.

I was using the 2426 beta for awhile, and the activation is no longer an issue :) ...and I think your prediction is golden :)

Yeah whats funny is my Dad bought Office XP and it was a academic version. Basically there is one number and a bunch of site licenses.... well he up the universal number in and it didnt work. So he called the MS people and they didnt know what to do. SO right now he not very pleased to say the least, and i told him XP was going to suck ass.

I don't like the registration, but I do like XP (both windows and office). As for XP sucking, I disagree completely. I like the new functions, and ms has made them more user friendly. For someone new trying to learn them, it would be easier than ever. I think they are quality products, hate MS or not. There are a few components I don't like, but there are also work-arounds for that.

one of your answers is messed up, how can product activation be both successful, AND the most cracked software in history?

If it's not cracked for home users, anyone who will get it "free" will probably get their corporate one that doesn't have the activation.

The technology itself will work and the media will claim it to be a success but a large percentage of people will use whatever crack is floating around to get by the activation.

It already has been cracked, packaged and was released as an ISO about 2 days before every beta release. I doubt the final will be any different.

You people are acting like this approach is actually something new. Intuit has been doing similar with Quickbooks and Quicken forever.

The only people it will affect are thieves.
