I'm sorry for posting this here but no one seems to read/reply in the OS forum. so.. which would you prefer? which is more stable? which is better? which would you INSTALL on your personal system? (and no this does not include linux/mac).

I like 98. It's getting a little difficult to purchase, tho...

I've installed/used ME once. It sure does boot like a bat outta hell, tho.

Windows 2k would be my vote.

Personally I would go with Win2K. But if you must install Win98 or WinME, I would definately go with Win98.

i am running ME on my new home machine....its fine after i upgraded my joystick drivers. However, that was a pain in the ass, b/c for some reason, the old drivers worked for about a week and then my pc would freeze up during loading the the startup items. So I didn't think the joystick was causing the problem for a while. All is very stable now. Boots fast, similar look and feel to the windows2k i use at work.

I would install Windows 2000 Pro first because it's stable and more and more games are supporting this OS with Win2k drivers.

Otherwise I would definitely choose Win98: SE over Win ME.

Both are pretty good,... i personally have one of each, Win ME runs perfectly fine for me, boots hella fast, runs everything pretty darn smoothly and the interface and layout is a little nicer in my opinion than 98, the reason i have 98 on the other system is because its mainly for games and so it just needs to run smoothly and run games well... also, there are some older software or just some smaller software titles that don't run on ME and aren't supported yet i.e. CuteMX & Tertinet = ), hence i needed the 98 sys as well, but both run well and are mostly trouble free for me... save the occasional mysterious loss of resources...

need old software or hardware support? Win 98SE
got all new stuff and don't care bout lil proggies like tetrinet? win ME

Id say 98 over ME.
ME sucks imho.
I dont touch either of them by choice though :D
2k and fbsd all the way.

I'm not pointing fingers or accusing anybody of anything, but it has been my experience that people who think WinME is good or sufficient are people who don't know much about computers. Again, please do not take offense to this, as I am merely speaking from my personal experience with others.

My opinion on the matter is as follows. WinME is SUCK! ;) just kidding, I'll try to interpolate some sort of a non half-assly-written opinion. ;)

I think Win98 is the better choice, marginally. There really is no advantage to having and using WinME. What does Win98 not support and not run? Anything at all? If the answer to this question for you is "nothing", then don't bother with WinME, it gives you nothing. It shaves 5 seconds of boot time in trade for more sluggish performance overall, a buggier and dos-stripped shell, and a very poor performing IE 5.5.

Although I'd opt for Win2K over both Win98 and WinME, if it comes down to 98 and ME I would choose 98, whether it be first or second edition. There really isn't much reason to use WinME.

I had a 300 w/96 ram and went from 98 to ME, and it was horrible. My friend's new 1.1GHz Tbird with 256 ram runs ME, and I was completely astonished as to how slow it actually was. I think that system would see a great deal of improvement as far as speed is concerned, if upgraded to Win98 or Win2K. Or better yet, Linux. ;)

Well I like ME. It can be a pain to get drivers for, though. If you're using an old modem, etc.

The system restore feature is a plus.

The fact that you don't need to download a buttload of patches from microsoft is nice. (especially if you're on dial up)

It just feels more solid, than 98. No I never had a problem with 98.

The quick boot is kinda over rated IMHO, it gets to the desktop faster, but then you wait for antivirus etc.

I haven't found it to be any slower than 98. I have a 566 celeron.

I guess if you already have a copy of 98, use that. But if you are going to buy it, I'd get ME

I'm also partial to 2k but if I had to choose I'd go with 98se. I find ME to be serious bloatware, even more so than 98se. Also, I know a number of people who have had countless hardware compatibility and software problems with ME.

Win98 is the clear choice. ME seems to be horribly bloated w/o any attention to performance.

people are always bashing ME because a real geek has to run linux or at least W2k.... if you stick with 98 you're also at least respectable because you're keeping your money away from Microsoft as long as u can....

how many of these people have installed/used ME? maybe a quarter.... just like the pro-German car or anti-import guys who've never actually driven what they rant against....

wake up people...

WinME is far superior to 98... More stable because of the removal of 16-bit support, faster booting, newest versions of all system files and windows drivers, useful restore feature, and lack of unnecessary bloat associated w/ all the workstation management overhead that Win2k has... (unnecessary for home user)

like i've stated many times, i've had no performance or stability issues w/ ME after i installed new drivers for my old sound card... everything was detected fine, runs great, no BSODs, runs all my games, and just feels very well integrated...

i have a 700@933 w/ 256MB of RAM and there's not a single app that doesn't feel fast... Photoshop loads in ~6 seconds... i get from cold to my desktop in about 20 seconds, including my antivirus and ICQ loading...

As for other people having issues.... i think i got this lucky cuz i installed clean onto a bare drive, and if that's what you're doing, ME is definitely the way to go....

98 will give u a 3 year-old buggy unstable and slower system but hey at least the geeks won't look down on you :)

Well, I know enough about computers to judge performance and based on what I've tried so far WinME is the winner. When I had 98 on my machine I was having daily problems, lockups, BSODs, fatal exception errors etc. Once I put WinME on my system it became a lot more stable and according to benchmarks it is just as fast as it was before.
