POLL: Will you use Apple's 99 cent Music Download Service?

It's a lousy, lossy 128 kbps AAC. If they offered FLAC lossless files I'd be very interested as a supplement to my normal CD buying.

I must care at least a little about sound quality since I have 2 x 250 GB Maxtors in my music server box to give me enough room to rip using FLAC, which only fits a little over 3 CDs per GB based on the approx. 750 I've ripped so far.

Very well. I am trying to decide which album I am going to buy and then burn it to CD. That will be the true test.

The fact is that Apple wouldn't make this service available and expect people to use it if the songs you were getting were of poor quality.

Please let us know what happens.

I'm tired of buying a whole CD album just for 3 songs which I like.

FWIW, I think a lot of people HERE aren't going to use this service for two reasons:

They don't pay for music in the first place
They don't like Apple

yep, most people here wouldn't pay $0.10 per song.

I'll try it out, we'll see if I like it. I was browsing it this morning and it needs more music.

I would agree with that, although I was surprised by the number of artists that were already available.

The selection reminds me very much of the selection at Columbia House, if that helps people out.

i won't... isn't it for macs only anyways?

i would pay 50 cents a song, but a dollar is a little much. maybe for one or two songs i really wanted that i couldn't find elsewhere

It is Mac-only right now. It will be available to PC-users this year.

I would be willing to use it, if it didn't cost that much per song.. Sorry, I think 30 - 35 cents a song is much more resonable and, if the price ever became that low, I would start buying music again.

I would be willing to, were it higher quality or cheaper. 128k is a bit low for my standards, especially for a buck a song.

One dollar per song is a bit excessive, plus you are only getting it in 128kbs. If the prices were cheaper, say maybe .25 per song, then I would definately use it. Also, I wonder how big their library is. It would be great if they have all of the extremely hard to find stuff, but if it is all just popular music then I doubt I will.

I will, and bought 2 songs last night to try it out. It's extremely well designed and integrated seamlessly into itunes. (mac only for now, windows in a year).

In response to a couple of the complaints with sound quality @ 128k, Apple offers 30 seconds of full-quality samples for every song, so you could check out the quality yourself before you pay. AAC supposedly sounds and compresses better then MP3, slashdot had an article on it today I think, although I haven't read it.

I really question if you guys saying "128bps.. waah..." have even heard AAC... we're not talking about 128bps MP3.. it's AAC... and if you look around on the Mac boards you'll see most people are reporting it sounds GREAT... I've got a mac and have listened to the 30sec samples on my Sony MDR 7506 cans and they sound good, much MUCH better than MP3 at 128.. I can't even stand to listen to mp3 at 128.
