The gap isn't all that great for average users. I've yet to meet a non-enthusiast, overclocker, video editor or renderfarm owner that can tell the difference between a fast AMD chip and a C2D. Sure, benchmarks point out a sizeable difference, but AMD is still the price/performance king.
K8L will be interesting, though. It's starting to get to the point where there are so many cores and such that the speed difference is no longer that important. We're going from a difference of 20mph to 60mph, which is great, to 150mpg to 175mph, which in all honesty, is no longer worth comparing.
That's my theory, at least.
