POLL: Will I get a ticket?

StageLeft

No Lifer
This morning I was driving and there are two lanes going each way with a thick green divider between each direction. I was several cars behind a yellow school bus which was in the left lane and I noticed a school bus on the other side had just turned on its red lights and the one on my side was flashing yellow. So I slowed down. By the time I got stopped I was just in front of my school bus on my side. In retrospect I should have just kept on going in the first place since it didn't go red until I was past it.

But anyway so I was about 3/4 car length or so in front of this yellow school bus to my left with its red lights on and I was just poking out in front kind of stupidly so I decided to just start driving again after a few seconds. Strictly speaking I was in front of it before the red lights even started and when I drove off, but on the other hand these bus drivers are anal and I had originally stopped for him and driven off before his red lights stopped - it's just that I don't believe I should have been stopped in the first place since I was already ahead of it!

So really we can't know. So guess what will happen. Also how are people generally notified if they get a ticket in such a manner? Mail or police serve the ticket? What's a ballpark $?

I'm not sure if I understand the situation, but school bus violation tickets are some of the most expensive you can get (at least in Michigan).

In Florida the Police pretty much haveo see the infraction..... IF they went on the bus drivers word, then there would be alot of enemies of the bus drivers that wouldget tickets.....

Well a friend of mine when he was 16 didn't know what stop behind a bus meant. It went red and he drove on by like an ass. Police came to his house and told him about it but didn't give him a ticket.

I wish I'd have just stopped there but I really felt like I was being an ass since the bus was behind me and I was just kind of sitting in the middle of the road so I went on 😱

I think you're fine dude.. if you were in front, doesn't the stopping only apply to oncoming traffic as it goes by the bus, and to traffic from behind the bus? the kids exiting the bus are in clear view when you have them in your rear-view.

Skoorbie, always be super careful around school buses. When in doubt, STOP and stay STOPPED!

How sad is it that your wife hears information about your life seconhand from a message board?

Yeah they are. It would have been physically impossible for me to run over a kid. I could see entirely in front of my car and to the left and right, but I bet bus drivers love to nab people!

I already told her beforehand.

skoorb, I wouldnt sweat too much if you didnt pulled over right then...however I always slow way down (like to 5MPH) when a school bus has the yellow lights on, and stop completely if they go red...I have a six year old son who rides the bus and I always think about him when I am around a bus

I say probably not. Most school bus drivers just get pissed off and don't actually report it. If you completely blew through the stop sign, then you might. The bus driver probably just looked at you and thought "yep, he's Canadian".

nope, I heard him from here. He said, "Ahh, darn Canadians...so smart till they come to America, eh?"

I know what you mean... but based on that reasoning I think you'll be OK.

It's a 5 pt ticket in Alabama I believe...
You're in Bham, they probably don't care/pay too much attention, especially in a situation like that.
I just hate it when you get on a busier road and the busest stop at each child's house to drop them off.. When I was in school, there was a central point that you get dropped off, and you walk the rest of the way home. It won't hurt a kid to walk home, I could understand if it was very stormy outside, but when its a nice day and the bus stops at each home on a busy road, it gets ridiculous.

Yeah I think it's a 5 point with possible short term suspension. Do they deliver these in person or through the mail? I am thinking I won't get one. I don't deserve on really so unless the bus driver is in a bad mood he'll see that as well. From his point of view he looked down and saw a car in front of him and probably wondered why the hell I was just sitting there. So then he sees me pull away very slowly...

If they issue a warrant, they usually go in person. You wouldn't get your license suspended though - License suspensions come by certified mail though..
Now occasionally a cop will ride on the bus and write tag numbers down, but that's highly unlikely.. Usually that just happens after an accident or at the beginning of the school year.

Don't worry about it, 99.9% likely that nothing will happen.

You won't get a ticket, you will just be deported!😛

If you do get a ticket, you can claim that you were ahead of the bus and that if the kids wanted to cross the street they would have had to go around your car. I am not sure if I understand the whole situiation so...

PICS???
