"basically a DIYer who shouldn't be DIY. I solved my lock up problems after the first time it locked up."
Good for you, but I don't think I'm alone in the 8500 lockups issue. Head on over to Rage3d and check out the 200+ post thread about it. Or the posts the mods have stickied to the top of the page.
Whether or not I COULD get that card to work is a moot point, whether it was worth it to continue was THE point.
I have an Epox 8KHA+ motherboard (reknown for 8500 problems) and had a 250watt psu* (I found out another potential problem). Nothing overclocked, tower case witrh 3 fans, conservative bios settings.
When I got the 8500, I:
fdisk/format/fresh install (no IRQs shared, or all on one IRQ as defaulted) - no good
Try latest 4in1s- no good
Try 3 different 8500 drivers - no good
I check Rage3d and see problems with motherboard and psu, say,"Hmmm, my GF3 and LOTS of other VGAs have run fine on this psu and mobo"
Return 8500, buy Ti4400, voila, end of lockups. (no fdisk and driver hunt either)
I've made my living in IT troubleshooting computers and databases for 4 years, but I guess according to you, I shouldn't try the "really hard" task of putting a box together. (I'd best forget all the ones I've tinkered on for the decade before I went into this line of work.
I'm glad your 8500 works for you, but that is one flakey card, and I love ATI products. I used a VIVO and 32DDR in the same box, no problem.
*BTW before you post some "if you're so knowledgeable, why are you using a 250 watt psu with an Athlon" type response, note that until I got a 8500, I had no reason to change. It ran a GF SDR, 4 different GTSs, 2 Radeons, a V5, and a GF3 just fine on Athlon/VIA boards. I ended up switching out and getting a 350watt psu, but not because of any problems, more because I was drunk and felt like opening up the box.
