I intend to get a ti 4200 to replace my geforce 2 ultra, the main reason being that I like like high (average) frame rates (85+) and the ultra cant keep that up in most games.

You're missing a category that I bet would be popular:
Got tired of lockups on my R8500 X

Just recently bought a GeForce4 Ti4400, it replaced a GeForce2 MX400, so far the Ti4400 is the best card Ive ever invested in.

Upgrade from GF3 or GF3 Class
More FPS for favourite Game

I'm upgrading to a Ti4600 for both of those reasons.

Also the first option is not really a reason for upgrading, it's simple a description of your previous video card. The second option is a reason for upgrading though.

I bought a TI4400 becuase a friend of mine bought my system with my Geforce2 pro in it so I needed a new video card. Thought about Radeon 8500 but realized that different in FPS was too large to not get the Geforce4.

You should put an option on there "Just built a new PC so why not?".

well, you did forget the ATI area of cards. Someone with an original radeon would want to upgrade for sure.

But not because the 8500 has lock ups, that is caused by one distinct set of problems, basically a DIYer who shouldn't be DIY. I solved my lock up problems after the first time it locked up.

Bought a Leadtek Ti4400. The best card I have ever bought with my money. Bought it due to a new Althon XP Rig and realized that the aging Xpert 2000 Pro just couldn't keep up. On Quake 3, I get around 16-20 FPS at 1024*768 MAX with the Xpert 2k. With the Geforce 4 I get 236 and above FPS at the same resolution.

Yup, that's what I did. I had an original Radeon (64 Meg DDR VIVO), and went to a GeForce 4 Ti 4600. My 3DMark2001 score went from 3200 3D marks at 1024x768x16 for the Radeon to 7200 3D marks at 1024x768x32 with the Ti 4600. That kind of improvement justifies the upgrade, in my opinion.:)

I upgraded from a radeon LE 32MB. the thing gets crappy FPS on games, and in general I was never happy with it. plus I am building a new rig. Hopefully i have all the parts by the end of next week.

My Canopus Pure 3D (voodoo 1 with 6mb of ram) just wasn't cutting it anymore. hey, by the way why did they stop selling to the US. I'd sure like to get my hands on a Canopus Geforce 4! (i went with the gainward 4400). actually they dont appear to have a geforce 4 card yet but here's there Geforce 3 ti 500: http://www.canopus.co.jp/catalog/spx21/spx21_index.htm

I bought my Ti4400 because I got a really good deal on it.. the Gateway deal..

I probably would have stuck with my GF3, but the deal was too good to pass up.. and I'll probably sell my GF3 card to boot..

cheers,

I bought a visontek ti4600 because it was the first card out of the door. I ended up paying 300$ for it through credit at Comp Usa. After seeing the overclocking possibilities on the 4200 I regret the ti4600 a bit. I'm making my own ramsinks to get the most out of the card, as well as putting dual fans (not sure how fast I can tolerate just yet) over the agp slot. The jump from a geforce 3 is well worth it to me though, as I play everything at 1280x1024 or 1600x1200, where the difference in performance means everything.

Went from a GeForce2 Pro to a Ti 4400. Also wanted more FPS and AA on some of my newer games like MoH:AA. Of course, after getting the 4400, I _had_ to upgrade my CPU from a 1.4ghz Tbird to a 2.2ghz P4 so I could take full advantageof the 4400... Damn cycle never ends ;)

"basically a DIYer who shouldn't be DIY. I solved my lock up problems after the first time it locked up."

Good for you, but I don't think I'm alone in the 8500 lockups issue. Head on over to Rage3d and check out the 200+ post thread about it. Or the posts the mods have stickied to the top of the page.

Whether or not I COULD get that card to work is a moot point, whether it was worth it to continue was THE point.

I have an Epox 8KHA+ motherboard (reknown for 8500 problems) and had a 250watt psu* (I found out another potential problem). Nothing overclocked, tower case witrh 3 fans, conservative bios settings.

When I got the 8500, I:
fdisk/format/fresh install (no IRQs shared, or all on one IRQ as defaulted) - no good
Try latest 4in1s- no good
Try 3 different 8500 drivers - no good

I check Rage3d and see problems with motherboard and psu, say,"Hmmm, my GF3 and LOTS of other VGAs have run fine on this psu and mobo"

Return 8500, buy Ti4400, voila, end of lockups. (no fdisk and driver hunt either)
I've made my living in IT troubleshooting computers and databases for 4 years, but I guess according to you, I shouldn't try the "really hard" task of putting a box together. (I'd best forget all the ones I've tinkered on for the decade before I went into this line of work.

I'm glad your 8500 works for you, but that is one flakey card, and I love ATI products. I used a VIVO and 32DDR in the same box, no problem.

*BTW before you post some "if you're so knowledgeable, why are you using a 250 watt psu with an Athlon" type response, note that until I got a 8500, I had no reason to change. It ran a GF SDR, 4 different GTSs, 2 Radeons, a V5, and a GF3 just fine on Athlon/VIA boards. I ended up switching out and getting a 350watt psu, but not because of any problems, more because I was drunk and felt like opening up the box.

I'm planning to upgrade my good ol' TNT2 Ultra to a GeForce 4 as soon as Doom 3 comes out. Doom 3 will be the first game that won't be able to run on my existing card, and I'll probably be able to pick up a a GeForce 4 Ti4200 for under $129 by then.

I should then be set for a few more years, or at least until the next ID Software 3D Engine comes out :)
