Just about ready to order all my bits for my new home Lan server (Win2k Advanced Server) and could do with some help deciding on the best video card to get for ultra stable drivers.

Im thinking of a Matrox G450 16mb SDR - what u guys reckon?

Ive put a poll together so would be real chuffed if you guys would participate and offer any feedback.

thanx,

rockhard =)

For a mission critical server, I would assume that you would not be playing games on it. Home LAN is not really mission critical though. Is Win2K AS appropriate? I think it would be a bit of an overkill there.

G450 is fine....I prefer the G400 though....it's been around longer. nVidia's drivers are fine too.....for their entire line of TNT/GeForce family cards. nVidia comes up with a new set of drivers far more often than Matrox though.

Heh, and i thought my lil server was so important ;)

Seriously tho', im planning on studying CCNA, MCSE over the next year or two so thought may as well go in the deepend :/
My dads complicated things tho' as he's demanding i play Falcon 4 with him occassionally.

Microsoft have been so kind to send me an evaluation copy of my chosen OS ;) otherwise it would be a non starter :(

Does the G450 use a unified driver like the nVidia's?

Rockhard,
Its best to get a 4-8MB ATI RAGE IIc chipset based card, you don't need to have any typr of 3D things going on so why pay extra money. Old S3 trident and Trio cards work great too. I have 8MB PCI S3 trio in my server and do not worry onw bit about drivers for it.

Matrox and Nvidia has been known to have good drivers. ATI have not. I'm sure your video drivers won't crash your system after you get it up and running. Just don't immediately update new video drivers until it's been verified as more stable.
