everybody should own a computer.

-edit- also, it is appropriate to call a computer CPU because at one time that is what we called them.

from dictionary.com

<hardware> The main body of a computer, consisting of a
plastic or metal enclosure, the motherboard, and (typically)
internal disk drives, a power supply, cooling fans, and
whatever circuit boards plugged into the mother board, such as
a video card.

The system unit is occasionally referred to as the CPU,
though this really means central processing unit.

No. Just no. I can't believe you would consider limiting what people could own just because they call the tower the CPU. Who GIVES A SH!T.

Having worked for Circuit City, I was glad to have a customer smart enough to call the box the CPU.

Customers concerned that their "modem" would have to be replaced if they got roadrunner. Customers whose "hard drives" needed new RAM. Customers who would buy emachines with 128MB of ram running Windows XP because it had 40GB of memory and that was enough.

Most people in my experience called it the hard drive, not the cpu.

i heard more people call it "processor" than "cpu"... i guess they are somewhat right since we use PCs to process something :p

heh, that's what I always call them...

A machine
A box
A host

Been a long time since I called one a computer.

Back when the Apple IIGS was released in 1986, they included a tutorial about what a computer can do and they called the computer a CPU. I think it was generally accepted back then.

On the other hand, if we limited driving to people who knew about cars, driving would be soooo much nicer...no traffic, fewer idiots on the road, no more "all show no go" riceboys...

Who cares what they call the computer?

No! People who call computers CPU's shouldn't be able to own a computer. ;)

I race at a dragstrip and I'm constantly being asked what type of dragster I race. A dragster is one of many classes that you can race, for those who don't know. Nobody is an expert on everything.

Following this logic, it's also OK to call a refrigerator a "Food," a camera a "lens," and a car an "engine".
I don't care what anyone calls anything. You could call your cat a binary star. It doesn't matter because it's none of my business.

You better care if it's your doctor:

"You have a bad kidney. It'll have to be removed."

"....oh wait. I meant 'toenail'."

As long as he removes the right thing, I don't care! :p
