Who do you think manufacture's the best CD-R media? I am not talking about the brand on the label, rather the manufactures with factories that actually makes the disc.

DO NOT answer the poll based on the label brand. Try to figure out who makes your disc and make your best guess from there.

Identification methods

Every CD-R's stamp has manufacture code encded into them and this can be read back using
CDR Identifier. This program requires an Adaptec ASPI by the way.

Most of the time, the manufacture name reported by CDR ID is correct, but the only thing you're sure of is the name of the manufacture that makes the CD master stamp. If someone else buys the stamp, it will still stamp same code into their discs.

Taiyo Yuden and Mitsui DO NOT sell their stamps, so if it says Taiyo Yuden or Mitsui, you can be assured its made by them.

Also, another way of identifying CD-R origin is the spindle. Gray or black base with crystal clear, solid, fragile covers are Ritek OEM's. The labeling and packing is all done by Ritek as an OEM order.

Three piece spindle consisting of bottom spindle with a shaft, transparent mily white cover and a 2" knob is Taiyo Yuden OEM

gray or black base with one piece, milky white top is used by many manufactures and it is hard to ID them. CMC shippings strictly use this spindle(thus Imations always comes in this package)

no its not an error. TDK no longer manufacture's their CD. It is OEM'ed from TY or one of the Taiwan giants

I dunno who makes em, but I lub Kingston Hypermedia. Big ass cheap, and never had a problem (maybe 2 coasters outta a billion discs). 50 cd spindle is like $8, can't beat that (for a regular price). Works in everything, they are just great.

I don't really think it matters...optical media isn't exceptionally difficult to manufacture. Anyhow, I voted for Eastman Kodak out of jingoism.

I've used mostly Prodisc's without any problems(although they are listed as being problematic on a certain site).

I voted for Mitsui Toastsu Chemicals. They are the one that makes Mitsui Silver's.

I voted for Ritek just because I'm using my Ritek made TDK's with no coasters yet, and they look good too!

Most of my good bulk CDR blanks are by Ritek. The CD Identifier program is still available for download, but it no longer supported by the authors in Germany. It does not work in XP. It did fine in ME. Anyway, here is another link which explains the CDRI problem and their official download site for the no longer supported version 1.63.

I usually use generic, no-name CDRs - I don't suffer any bad burns (well the odd one perhaps), but I've never had a problem with any discs I've burnt, even ones which are years old and still in heavy use.
