As far as coverage, it's going to vary person to person, no matter what company you're talking about.
I have ATT. Service is ok, sucks at my house, but works 90% of the places I go. The price I pay for the service is enough for me to stick with it. My phone is crap tho, and i'm about to upgrade. Because I'm in their national/corporate account program, phones are heavily discounted, and I DO NOT have to agree to a new term to get a new phone. That is regardless if I get a phone that is free or $200.
For example, the following are FREE upgrades, no contract or anything:
Nokia 3595
Motorola T721
Ericsson T226
Ericsson T306
Siemens C56
Siemens M56
