I think about this one all the time when I'm installing new programs. They give a warning to close any applications, but most of the time I just leave them open, since the computer might restart and you would lose possible information.

I always close other programs before I install a new one hoping I'll get as clean an install as possible. Then, once the install is complete, I shut down & restart. My philosophy is: If I do it right the first time, the chances that I end up having to reformat the HD are minimal. -kd5-

I usually don't, only when installing drivers.
Maybe in win2k....NOT :D
Dual 550's w/ 256mb can run a lot of 5h!t :p

Actually, the real reason why they say to close all programs, is so that one installs faster, and makes you "think" it's a good program by not taking long to install.
Ah the mind games :D

Ah, but how many of you are anal enough to go into windows\system\msconfig.exe & close up all the hidden system tray apps that arn't esential?

Dabanshee,

I tweak that too. They take up valuable resources and cpu cycles that are better used for rc5 . I guess that makes me an anal crack geek. ;)

I didn't really need to know about you devious nature. :)

It depends on what I am running and installing as to what I shut down or close out. I have already went into msconfig and turned off all the crap anyway.

I never close open programs unless it's a big install like that takes up 300mb or something but as for anything else nope never.

Yeh I turn most of that crap off to, otherwise you end up with a million things running in the system tray. But most of us keep a couple of non esential system tray apps going, like a hardware monitor or a opti-mouse driver app.

Do any of you actually close all of them just to load programs, is what I ment?

I only close other programs if I'm installing something new.

If its something i've used before and i'm installing it on a new computer or reinstalling...who cares, just install
