The 9600XT. By a lot. It's more like a 5700Ultra.

The next legitimate step up I can see (at that site) would be the eVGA 6600GT for $CDN169. This would be, IMO, well worth it, as it is easily twice as fast as the 9600XT.

PCI, like regular old PCI?

Not many choices there. Please search in the Video forum for lots of other people trying to upgrade hopelessly old machines. The best available choices at this point are the FX5700LE, and the RADEON8500/9100 (note: NOT the 9000/9200; they are totally different and much slower). There is also a PCI GeForce 6200, but I haven't seen performance numbers on it.

Find a damned 9600. The 5500 is worse than the 5200 and the 5200 is worthless. The 5200 Ultra was actually okay though, but ATI's 9XXX generation of cards were significantly better.

5500 is just a higher clocked version of the 5200.

i would try to find a PCI 6200, 5700LE or some ATI. thats your best bet.
