POLL: Which MOTOR OIL is superior?

All these oils have great qualities. However, if you had to choose ultimately, which oil was more superior, which would it be? Superior in terms of protection/lubrication & burn off protection.

*AMSOIL claims to be the best and it states it on their website, but everybody claims to be the best..

*Personally, i use Castrol GTX HIGH MILEAGE 75,000 (20w50) for my Ae86. You can't beat $3.00 / qtr at Walmart. =)

*But lately, i've been considering upgrading to other brands. MOTUL is preferred but costs WAYYYYY too much for the oil.

*Redline, not sure on this one. A lot of ppl like their tranny fluid, but i dont' know much about their car oils.

Depends on the engine.

For instance, I'd use Castrol's TWS 10w60 synthetic over any of those above with an M3/M5 engine. However, for other cars, I'd be comfortable with say, Mobil 1. It really depends.

BTW, Amsoil's marketing material uses tests that don't seem to really have much to do with how wear actually happens in an engine (ie 4-ball wear test). There's lots of great info on bobistheoilguy.

no valvoline? :Q

Mobil One or Amsoil.

Actually any one of the synthetics that meet the SL or SM API certification. Doesn't matter. Really.

No really. If I spend more than 30 seconds at the parts store deciding that's too much time. YOU WILL NOT SEE A DIFFERENCE. EVER.

For example, there are certain Mercedes and BMWs on the market that come with Mobil One that have their first recommended oil change at 15,000 miles. That's from the manufacturer.

Amsoil is an excellent oil as well, however for a while some of their lines were not API certified (I don't know if this is still the case). That and I just don't like their Amway like business structure.

If it's an older car without catalytic converters, then I use Shell Rotella T 15W40 diesel oil. It has an anti-scuff additive called ZDDP, which is great for flat tappet cams and basically any motor in general (however it's not compatible with catalytic converters). All the racers use it. Word is Shell will be dropping the ZDDP out of their formula in the next year due to emissions laws, but there are a few others out there that will still have it such as a certain Valvoline Racing oil.

BTW, the color of the oil on the dipstick (black) is absolutely NOT an indicator of it's ability to lubricate.

I've always used Mobil-1 and have been very happy with it. Personally I'd not use Amsoil, seems the only people I ever hear talking about how great it is also happen to sell it (MLM-type thing).

Mobil 1 for engine, redline for transmission.

<-- has three quarts of Redline MTL for his transmission and three quarts of Richmond Gear Lube for his rear end ready to go in on the 4th of July.

I picked up Mobil 5000 mile oil though, since I typically like to change my oil every 4000 miles, I wouldn't see the benefits of a synthetic in the engine. The transmission and rear end don't get changed that often though, so it's worth it.

i didn't know AMS OIL was a multi level marketing scheme? no wonder i see so much promotion about this product.

If anything, after hearing that it's a MLM company, it's such a huge turn off. I hate MLM companies. I used to be part of Quixtar. Big mistake.

There was a class action alwsuit about that and Benz lost. It seems that a lot of people needed new motors when follwing the 10K mile oil change.

For me I go between Mobil 1 Synthetic and Castrol for motor oil and Redline/Royal Purple for tranny

We use Amsoil in our race engine, changed after every race. Honestly I'd use pretty much any decent oil in our race engine (we used to use Valvoline Racing oil), but our engine builder said he saw almost an 18hp increase on the dyno with amsoil with his engine (800+ HP boat engine), and no he doesn't sell it. Our engine for our race car is a little more mild (440 hp), but even if we get 3-4 HP with amsoil it's worth it for us. We also use amsoil gear oil in the rear end.

Now on my street car, I use whatever synthetic is cheapest.

mobil 1... i recently switched to pennzoil platinum to give it a shot and at half the cost after rebates 🙂 I just put it in, so I won't have a UOA till maybe august.

But I use synthetic mainly for piece of mind since I auto-x. Altho, if I juse use dino and change it out after every event, I'd probably be good still. Unless I started doing 2-3 events a month.. that might get tiring.

Mobil 1, cheaper than Amsoil, almost as good.

What about castrol?

Castrol Syntec isn't a pure synthetic so I won't use it.

I'd use their dino oil no problem if I changed my oil every 3k, but I change my oil every 5k so I use Mobil 1.
