The first one is underexposed and the second one is overexposed. What you need to do to capture that shot is get a tripod. Then you need to take 2-3 shots at various exposure levels, then combine them in photoshop in order to get the sky/foreground/background all exposed properly. It's easier than it sounds, but you can't do it hand-held because the pictures won't match up all that well unless you are VERY steady.
wow, a new trick! I will give this a try and see how it goes. how do you combine pics in photoshop? what's the command?
although, I have to say, I did that for both pictures.
the 1st one was just the default settings, and I set the camera on the ground using the timer. the 2nd one, I set the camera to maximum exposer setting and again, set it on the ground. I guess I should've done it in the same position...but I will give the photoshop trick a shot.
