Any distribution of Linux.

And please make sure you have used either one at least once in your life!

Like the other guy said, do you have any function in particular in mind? For a server its *nix hands down, I'm afriad I just can't use linux as a desktop full time yet though, its not ready.

Best OS is Mac OS. That's what most serious professional graphic artists use. Don't know any professional graphic artist preferring linux. Since no purpose for the OS was mentioned, I can use any purpose, can't I?

I would say Mac OS X, but the final version doesn't ship until the 24th, and I've only used the beta. Still, it beats Windows and Linux. Oops! Now I'm gonna get slamed. :(

I saw this quote once...

Unix for development.
Mac for graphics.
Windows for solitaire

I think that's close. What does "best" really mean anyway? I think Linux is great but it's still not a desktop OS in my opinion. I will go out on a limb here and say Mac OSX will be the best one out there, combining easy user interface and a Unix backbone. That's speculation though. I guess we can see in 8 days when it's released.

dos :) hhehheehehe

Hmm... for the average user, Win9x/me
Power User who needs to accomplish stuff: (dont flame me) Win2k
For server stuff: Linux

Linux is making tremendous strides to get the power user denotation in my book though

Windows 2000 Advanced Server. Stablitiy with functionality. I am very loyal to Microsoft and other big companies. I dont believe linux is ready for the market of standard consumer, which is what it's all about.

Unix- Free Bsd

---------------
Errr Windoze

Put it this way, Win2k was built for use with the internet and networking.

Win98SE is just my backup system for what little gaming I do.
If your a gamer then stick with Win98SE for performance.

I maxed out Win98SE with 40 concurrent connections to the net with napster, ftp, mirc, internet explorer, netscape, audiognome, imesh... and that sucked!

Win2k ROCKS for a windoze product.
I have my own ftp server, opennap server, http server, ircd server... all running without a hiccup from Win2k. Sweet!

For gaming, it's all about Windows ME, 98, etc.

For print publishing, the Mac is the best.

For development, it used to be OpenStep, NeXTStep, but I would have to say Microsoft makes some excellent development suites. I really like the Visual development packages they have made.

For a server, I would say some BSD variant.

For an embedded OS, Linux is pretty durned good, though I hear Be is really going to push Stinger to the forefront if they have anything to say about it.

And for e-commerce/SAN, databases - Solaris hands down.

Mac - never really liked it...
Win 95/98 - Easy to use, but unstable
Linux - Hard to use, but seems to be stable
Win 2k - Easy to use, pretty stable, would use it more than win98.
BeOS - Never tried it.
DOS - easy to use. very stable.

What do I use now? Win98.
What's my favorite? It will have to be windows98se

DOS 6.22

Extremely stable, and was probably the best OS I have ever used.

Best ALL-AROUND OS: Windows 2000.
The only real competition would be Linux and it just isnt ready for prime-time.

There are better OS's depending on your use through.

best all around os - win2k server

because it has the most application support. (for every use)
linux would be good but it lacks applications overall.

Depends on usage:

win2000 for work/business
win98SE for home use

I use one in each place.
