I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this, but I just wanted to take a survey on which is the more popular classic game. Warcraft 2 or Half Life. In other words, do you prefer Warcraft 2, or Half Life?

Thank You for taking the time to respond.

server.counter-strike.net
According to GameSpy, Counter-Strike is played more than any other FPS, and if you combine all the FPS' that are being played, they *still* don't come close to the amount of players that CS has. Now that's what I call a user base. Then again, CS can't compare to the kind of traffic Battle.net sees. :)

This is rather an apples to oranges comparison. It's almost like asking "which is better, MS Word or Adobe Photoshop".

In 1995 and 1996 it would have been Warcraft 2. Now i would guess Half Life. In overall sales i'm not sure, FPS games are usually not huge sellers (although HL's budget pricing would have helped).

Probably a fairer comparison would be HL vs Starcraft. I'm pretty sure SC would still be more popular

HL is one of the games that sold the most copies ever. Starcraft solt alot more copier than warcraft2 and I still dont think it even comes close to the amount HL sold.

halflife was a classic? heh :p

i'd say warcraft 2.

maybe you should change it to "which is more popular? warcraft 2 or CS?", coz as far as im concerned, CS isn't half life. its just a mod.

(from various-potentially inaccurate sources)

At the end of 2000 Half life had sold about 2 million copies.

Warcraft has sold at least 1.3 million copies. The bnet version and budget pricing would have increased this, but not by a lot. This also excludes considerable Mac sales

In 1999 i think SC had sold 1.6 million copies (excluding broodwars add on and battlechest). I would imagine all up it comes very close to HL.

The MS Flight Sim series dwarves HL with sales in excess of 17 million( yes, i know it started in 1980, but it's still pretty impressive-2.8 million copies in 1999 alone)

As an individual game Mysts sales of 4+ million make it the biggest seller from 1993-1999 (i have no stats for 2000, but i guess Diablo 2 must be in the running now?)

In terms of popularity- it takes a lot to beat HL (and especially CS). Flight Sim isn't played online of course. Starcraft is more popular in South Korea (about as many sales there as USA). Basically WC, SC and HL are all groovy and popular games.

you also have to keep in mind that warcraft 2 was made years ago when gaming wasn't as main stream (or as easily accessible - coz many ppl didn't have PC's) as it is now. half life was released when more people had started playing games and computers were more mainstream.

Most people seem to think this is a which game would you play now question and it isnt. WC2 was one of the games to really start up RTS overall, it was an excellent game.

Personally, War 2 is my fave game of all time. It was a giant in it's time and very few modern RTS games can touch it's gameplay. I played several hundred games of War2 on Cases Ladder - anyone else play there?
