Would you rather live ABOVE somebody with a large subwoofer playing bass a lot or BELOW such person?

I'm trying to see if it makes a difference and if bass travels up walls more, or down them.

Sound transmitted through walls is going to be non-directional, so that's not really the issue. The real problem is the flooring; a subwoofer on an upstairs floor will not only transmit downard via the wall framing, but directly along the floor (i.e. your ceiling) as well. Upstairs from the noise source is better.

I live in the middle....on the second floor on my apt complex. I don't mind the noise from upstairs or downstairs when it comes to music or drumsets.... I just have a problem with the two FAT CHICKS that live upstairs. They sit down on beds or get someone to have sex with them (hard to tell who or what) and it sounds like the springs are screaming for their lives. These springs are in their beds, in their chairs, etc.... It is a constant high-pitched squeak sometimes.

We're the people who are typically the ones "playing" the music. We're never loud on off peak hours, but we still get complaints from the people upstairs. The reason I ask is when they play their music, it never really sounds bad to us. Perhaps we have way better speakers, or I thought it might have somethign to do with the way the sound travels.

I always had problems with people above me, but now that I'm on the top floor I've never had noise problems - even with several different families haveing lived below me. The whole ceiling vibrating bothers me a lot - so I don't want someone noisy above me.

I prefer to live on the top floor because I like it. Sound from speakers travels in any direction, but footsteps don't.

I think above is better. I live next to a pianist girl... Oh my... She can't play, she's got no talent. It's not music, it's a caterwauler. Luckily enough, looks like I'm not the only one who dislikes pianists. She usually plays only in the daytime when I'm at work :) And occasionally on weekends. Still sucks though. I think these radios and spakers should be banned or heavily taxed depending on their size b/c when fools get their high power speakers they make everyone's life a nightmare.

I have separate carpeting under all my speakers to dampen the sound going through my floor to the guy below me.

Above. Then you can stomp around like an elephant when they play the stereo too loud. Below, you'd have to stand on something to pound on the ceiling.
