POLL: Which grade of gas do you use for your car?

I use plus because in Iowa they load it with ethanol and the government subsidizes the crap out of it, making it cheaper than regular.

You should always run the grade of gas that your car was made to run on...running premium in a car built to run on 87 octane regular is a waste of money, provided that the car will run without piniging on regular. MOST cars sold in the USA are designed to run perfectly fine on 87 octane, yet people insist on usnit primium in them and THINK they get more horsepower out of the engine...not with todays' relatively low compression engines...

9.8 to 10+ compression is "low"??

Almost all German and Japanese cars recommend premium and use knock sensors to retard timing to prevent engine damage if regular is used. Using regular in a car that recommends premium can lose 10% or more of the rated power because the ECU will cut back the timing. In such cars running premium absolutely will give more power.

Just because a car _can_ run on 87 in a pinch because the ECU will retard the timing to prevent detonation does not mean that the car should be run on 87, and it most definitely does NOT mean that the engine will make the rated power on 87.

Manual says 87/regular is fine, but all the stations in my area charge the same price for 89/plus, so I use that.

Yay for another Iowan 😀
Although doesn't the ethanol mixed stuff get lower mileage? I don't know whether it will justify the price difference between the regular (87 oct) and ethanol-mixed stuff (89 oct).

91 (premium) if I feel like spending the money on it (read: if it's nearly the same price). 89 (plus) otherwise.

My car would self destruct if I put 87 in it (OK, maybe not self destruct... but it's *extremely* obvious that the engine is in "you're a dumbfvck" mode if you do that).
