Option 1: Old monitor (It's got some serious geometry distortion and is VERY dark), R9600 Pro, NF7-S, Soundstorm.

Option 2: New monitor, R9100, KT266a mobo, SBLive.

Everything else will be the same - XP2200 CPU, 256mb RAM being the primary other items to keep in mind.

Edit: Reason I'm asking is that it costs the same either way, and I've been deliberating on it for a month and can't pick one.

This monitor hasn't budged in price for 3 years. It isn't gonna drop now. Damn stable CRT prices.

Your current monitor is obviously crap, why not just pick up a 19" for under $200 and be happy?

New Monitor. The price of the video cards will drop by the time you need the speed of the 9600 it should be a cheaper investment. It is unlikely CRT's will drop in price that much in that time.

Because I don't trust sub-$200 monitors after this. It lasted EXACTLY to the end of the warrenty.

I've come up with a third possibility - I can drop the video card altogether and switch to the lower res version of the monitor, which saves about $70. This makes sufficient room for an NF7-S, and I have some 2d cards laying around that could allow the machine to fulfill it's primary roles until I can afford somthing else.

what good are the video cards if you cant enjoy what they are putting out?

Get the monitor
