You've already made a decision but I still want to throw in my opinion.
I'm not going to sugar coat it, the C240 is crap. It's terribly slow and gas mileage isn't that good. The C230k is a much much better car that's cheaper, faster, more powerful, and gets better mpg. That's not to say that the C230k is an awesome car... i think it's still underpowered. But it drove much better than the C240 for me. The interiors are nice and the shifts are smooth in both cars (well, both keep on upshifting when you need to give it a little gas, argh).
The CLK430 is nice. I like the body, even though I think it looks a little dated, but it's nice. The interior isn't as nice as the C-class, but it's not bad. Only problem is that from what I've researched, the early (98-99) CLK430's have problems. The transmissions like to go out, there's a common problem with the sunroof, and a few other electrical things that cost $$$. That's why I've been looking at primarily 2000-2002 CLK430s. I think that the transmission problems started occuring around the 40k-60k mark. But check out a few of the benz forums and you'll find everything you need.
but compared to the C240... the CLK430 is by far much better. similar mpg but the clk430 won't force you to hunt for gears when it needs power.[/q
Yeah,
right now I have a 96 A4 and that car's maintenance schedule is why i need a new one...
From my experience with benzes, just about anything will cost you $$$ if you have it done at the dealer. My moms C class had a problem with the heater blower - the fan wouldn't work. We took it in and it was about $500 to fix there. So I asked them if I can fix it at home and they said it's about 4 screws away, so the repair is an hour at most. In the end the charged me 80 bucks for diagnostics and I got it fixed with 60 dollar replacement from ebay.
Generally speaking, the cars are well engineered, so if you need to DIY at some point, it's relatively accessible. The blower motor I replaced was literalily plug and play.
