Pioneer here too, except I've got the 105S, yes the loud one.
Works well though.

Pioneer slot load all the way! Especially since I painted mine to match my aluminum case, with the DVD-ROM emblem painted red. Looks very cool!

Toshiba 2x on my current (old) box. My dad's box has a Toshiba 12x, and I just bought a Toshiba 16x to go in my new system. All are great, quiet drives. DAE is a little slow, at least on my 2x, but I use my Plextor 16/10/40A for ripping now.

Creative 12x.....worst piece of crap I've ever owned without a doubt. Got it for Christmas a year ago. UPS is bringing a toshiba drive to replace it (finally).

What would you guys recommend between the Toshiba SD-M1612 & the Lite-On LTD-163?
My main use is watching DVDs, but I'd also like a drive that's good at ripping music and video.

Pioneer 16X here also. Kinda dissapointed that alot of my old VOB ripping programs didnt work with this newer drive though. Still havent found a program that works well. I had an old Pioneer 8X before this also.

<< So why is the Pioneer Slot loader so great? :)
Mabye I'll pick me up one of those...
>>

It's different b/c it's slot, AND it works well. Sometimes stuff that's different doesn't work well, or stuff that works well looks like everything else. This differentiates you from every1, and it's a solid performer.

Everybody says how great the Pioneer slots are, but does anybody know AOpen make slot loaders too? With Pioneer's technology, and their own dampering system, the AOpens are relatively quieter than the vacuum-like Pioneers, they're also cheaper, and their bezel looks cooler. Toshibas would've been perfect if they aren't locked down to 2~4x DVD movie playback. LiteOns would've been perfect if they can do a better job of handling scratched and ill-maintained CDs. Pioneers, they would've been perfect if they can actually playback DVD at 16x and not half that speed, if they can DAE faster, and if they become better CloneCD compliants. You can go on and make a case for almost any brand out there, the truth, there is no perfect DVD-ROM, in fact, many brands out there have one or more significant drawbacks.
