Just wondering where everyone's loyalty lies...

It's late so if I left off some obvious other choices, post them and I'll add them to the poll.

I bought my first switch about 5 years ago and it was a D-Link 16 porter....since then I have owned all dlink NICS and Routers, except my new linksys USB Wireless G adapter for my BB Toshiba laptop. I have bought the D-Link stuff because it is what I have found cheapest the days before I made my purchases, not that I am partial to them.

I am not partial to a single brand. Netgear makes a good wired router but their wireless routers are simply horrible.

Smoothwall for the router/firewall, D-Link DSS-24+ for the switch. Both work brilliantly.

Used to like Netgear. Their customer service is horrible since they moved it offshore. I can no longer recommend them. IN fact I am a senior network engineer and I will no longer use their products since their service has gotten horrible. The only time I call customer service is when there is a problem with the machine. I mean something like it corrupting tcp packets and I have traces to prove it etc. and they keep asking the same scripted questions. I am now looking at Linksys since they were purchased by Cisco.

Well I'm Biased I love Imagestream routers ( http://www.nwfusion.com/reviews/2003/0714rev.html shows them best for latency times and they just crushed Cisco) they're high end routers for performance and good prices at that level of routers (not a linksys/d-link SOHO cheapy but rack mounted ISP/Enterprise grade). course I ended up working for them ... so I'm biased but Network World Fussion was an indepedent tester.

I've only used 2 brands: linksys and d-link and from these 2, the linksys gave me less problem. So I'm gonna go wtih linksys.

You may want to compare apples to apples. I read that review and they used a defunct Cisco router for compare. Hardly a true side by side comparision.

well it was an older test and the reviewer stated that cisco didn't want to provide a machine because "cisco customers care about more than just the proformance" but yeah it would be great to get an outside test of modern to modern, I keep ribbing the marketing guys on that -I'm in production.

I choose linksys. While my last router/ap from them had a bad habit of losing wifi speeds and occasionaly not allowing wifi to work at all, it never gave me a problem with settings and configuring server software to run through it. And the linksys wifi card I have has been flawless (well, provided I use its original driver software. the newer drivers use a new config monitor that uses a fair amount of cpu, enough to cause video playback issues in my barly capable 1ghz celeron laptop). The dlink router i have now has been fine (the 514, it DOES have the wifi disconnect issues everyone has reported, but for me it seems superficial only, it dosnt actually effect the flow of data, which is kinda wierd.) but the dlink wifi card I have requried a complete winxp reinstall, and I had to manualy gimp (ie remove one of its startup applications) just to run my laptop stable.

I am not partial to many brands myself in this genre. but I have 5 of the DSS 24s @ work which have worked without incident for almost 3 years.
The Dlink routers are crap!

I prefer the Buffalo G routers (with good success on the SMC 2804wbr as well). And have had no issues with some netgear wired routers for my remote users.

Linksys, I can not stand!

I have a Cayman 3220H that has been in continuous service for over four years. My loop is a measured 20,400 feet. The Cayman reports my line speed as:

(I've seen 5.0 db noise margins)

linksys user here. <3 linksys routers. but i don't like their wireless adapters though.

my friend loves trendnet a lot. i've never had a router from them, but their wireless cards are very good.

If one buys technology out of being loyal to Brand, hopefully he has a loyal Mental health professional as well.

Assuming that one Brand can do every thing right across the board right is ignorance at best.

Example Concerning Entry Level Network Hardware:

A simple NIC ? It Does Not Matter Brand

Wired Router ? SMC 7004BR

Access Point (only) - 802.11b ? Linksys WAP11

Inexpensive fast Wireless - 802.11g D-Link

Solid 802.11g Wireless - Buffalo

Game Adaptors ? Linksys

Giga Router with Jumbo Frames ? SMC.

NAS - Buffalo

So my Favorite Brand is: ItDoesNotMatterLinksysSMCD-LinkBuffalo. 🙂

P.S. Microsoft is currently out of the Consumer Network Hardware.

I just bought a D-Link wireless system (router and PCI card) and just finished installing this bad boy. I must admit, it did take some effort, but with the 24/7 tech support, I was up and running within a short time. I did some checking around and it was a toss up with D-Link and Linksys. I found a few articles here and there and found that I liked the D-Link at the end after some research. Looking forward in doing a security camera setup later using the D-Link camera system.
