When i'm walking down a Hall or along a sidewalk, i tend to stay to the right side, unless there are specific reasons to walk to the left. when i don't think about it, i make the subconscious decision to stay to the right.

is this try for most people?

I tend to watch for people walking towards me and then imperceptibly shift my weight towards them, or keep straight on as though they weren't there. It's amazing how these nearly invisible little weight changes are instantly processed and reacted to by someone walking towards you, they'll shift so they walk out of your way; though it may take longer for some people, they expect you to move.

I used to do that walking across my college campus all the time, to entertain myself. It's an interesting personal space violation. And this is the grammatically worst post I've ever put together but I'm too lazy to fix it.

basically, ya, that's what i'm talking about. for me, it's a default, i go to the right immediately without even giving it a thought. it doesn't require a decision because it's premade.

just wondering if i was alone in that respect.

now, in England, mb they walk to the left, and that is perfectly understandable.

Most of the time, except when passing. Much like driving.

I wonder if there is some relationship between being a bad pedestrian and a bad driver...

:)

ya, that just happened to me today, that's what got me thinking about it. i was walking down the hall on the right side without really paying attention to what is in front of me and this guy almost bowls me over, he also is walking probably also not paying attention, but he was on HIS left side.

hmmmmm.

Right in the middle. Sometime I even put my arms out and stretch when someone gets near.

I hate the thick-necks in offices who feel they aren't blocking hallways/aisles and REFUSE to move out of the way for someone coming through. I just want to kick them in the nads!

But, yeah, I stick to the right.

that's fine.

one thing i noticed when i was in korea is, no one wants to get out of the way. so i'm walking down the street minding my own business when this college chick bumps into me and falls down. I'm 5'11" about 230 lbs, so unless you are relatively big yourself, it would seem to be in your best interest not to run into me. but it happened so much that eventually, i had to start watching out for everyone else and getting out of their way.

i never quite understood it.

Yes, I tend to stay to the right side. Unfortunately, there's lots of people that don't, so it doesn't always work out.

While we're on the subject of hallways and walking, I hate it when people sit on the floor against the wall and then stretch their legs out into the middle. The hallways are narrow enough that their legs end up being out to the middle of the hallway, so I have to step over them. One of my friends kicks them and keeps walking. Pretty funny to see their reaction.

I wonder if this post reveals you to be an introvert of the most suspect nature.

that's weird. i haven't been to Korea in a very long time, but i would have assumed the opposite.

Heh. In Europe where they drive on the left side of the road, most people walk on the left.

You could always spot Americans in Ireland because they walked opposite everyone else :)

If you aren't thinking about it and it's a subconcious decision how do you know you did it? Are you sure?

You can turn around and think, "Gee, I just walked down the right side of the hallway and when I started doing it I didn't conscientiously make the decision to do so, thus it must have been subconscious." And while it may simply be a fluke if it doesn't occur with regularity, if you find yourself doing it often you can be fairly sure its a subconscious decision.

Usually it's just a subconscious thing. I don't go out of my way to walk on one side, but I just do out of convinience.

Yeah, even in Wal-mart if you look around most people walking do it that way as well. Atleast in America. Maybe its opposite in London? :D
