For instance, every now and then I hear someone say "my computer has 512 meg of RAM"

This is someone in the IT field, not just random people who don't know anything about computers.

I am curious if this is more common than I thought.

I have always said "my computer has 512 Megs of RAM" use it plural.

Have you noticed that grammar in the US is not the greatest? Not to be a snob as I am sure I am not always grammatically correct.

I say "Mebs".

And from time to time, I've been known to encourage the consumption of mass quantities and tell people I'm from France.

I use the singular meg, or gig as appropriate.

However, my computer weighs 37.5 pounds.

We are inconsistent aren't we?

megs

Technically though, "megs" isn't a word. For proper grammar it shouldn't be shortened like that, so it should be megabytes. But we're lazy :p

As previously alluded to, we should really say "mebibytes".

1 megabyte L2 cache, etc ;)

My supervisor writes things like 100mgs. It's all I can do to tell her it's not a prescription.
