When should I upgrade my aging 8800GTS 320MB and upgrade to what.

Bear in mind that I'm honestly at this point not interested in ATI cards.

Please add comments, thought and/or suggestions.

I would just wait, but I'm cheap like that.

If your system is doing fine in all the games you like, then just sit back, enjoy your card and wait for the next generation.

As I've said before - wait until you can DOUBLE your performance.

However long it takes, even beyond February...

I'm planning to get a new monitor to upgrade from my current 17" CRT (ew...lol).

So, taking that into consideration....If I'm going to wait before I upgrade what monitor do I get:

1) 17" (1280x1024)
2) 19" (1280x1024)

3) 20" (1680x1050)
4) 22" (1680x1050)

5) 24" (1920x1200)

Hmm...Maybe I should make a post on this issue in video.

The higher your resolution is, the more benefit the increased memory bandwidth on your CURRENT card gives... it will be outperformed in every resolution, but it will be outperformed LESS in the higher resolutions...

At any rate your current card is only a little slower then those two cards you mentioned... it is simply not worth it.. in fact many people like me are still using a geforce 7... I hope the GF9 comming soon are fast enough and cheap enough to justify a purchase. I Would like to finally move from the 7 series.

Get the 22", 1680x1050 - the price/size ratio is about right. You can get it for about $200 - $250.

You'll be amazed, coming from the 17" CRT, and your 8800GTS will most likely be sufficient, too.

And get the monitor first - whatever size you'll decide to get.

It will give you an opportunity to test your 320MB GTS. If the performance is disappointing, it will be much easier to decide to get a new Video Card.

And it will offer you a much better excuse to spend the money on the Graphics Card... LOL.

If you can sell your gts for $200+, switching to a 8800gt is a great idea, IMO. I don't think you would upgrade your monitor every 6 months, so don't let your current video card limit your monitor choices.

munky... he is using a 17" CRT...

Let him get a new monitor first, and test it...

It might carry him until February, when the choice will (hopefully) be much broader.

I would not get a new card for 1024x768.

Get the new monitor, Cheex, and test your current 8800GTS to its limits!

Well I guess I'll get the monitor first and then test the crap out of this card.

BTW: I game at 1280x960.

Note: Upgrading to 4GB (2x2GB) in a couple of weeks.

Cool! Get the monitor first.

BTW, if I may suggest something, wait for your 2x2GB setup until you get your Monitor/Video Card situation resolved.

Do you intend to run the 64-bit Vista any time soon...?

2GB of RAM is plenty with any 32-bit Windows.

I got 3GB for Quake 4 and STALKER (2GB would show 99% memory use), and because I was... curious LOL.

Why wait?

I actually want to try out the Vista x64.

Order of upgrades:
1) 4GB
2) 24"
3) D9E

Go with a 24 inch monitor... they are under 300$ now and dont reduce the hight (due to widescreen) compared to older monitors...

And yea, if you CAN sell your GTS for 200+$ and get a 3870 or 8800GT 256MB then it would be a good deal... if you can being the key here...
Maybe list it on ebay with a min bid of 200?

A friend of mine was just about to buy it from me today for J$18,000 (US$250).

That deal has gotten delayed/cancelled, so.....no upgrade for me just yet.

I want a 24" monitor but the next question is WHICH ONE???

It's your decision, but unless you are running out of memory, 2GB is plenty.

Funny thing is that you can't even install the 64-bit Vista with 4GB of RAM - you gotta do it with 2GB, install the patch, and only then put the remaining 2GB in.

I'll give 64-bit Vista at least another year before I even think about it.

But... if you are "curious", go for it!

I've got the 22" ACER and am pretty happy with it. 24" ACER is pretty affordable, too, at around $300 - $400.

The rest just depends on how much money you are willing to spend...

Well problem is:

I'm a gamer but I watch a lot of movies as well. So, I want a good balance.

I've read that at that size, a TNs viewing angles are really noticeable, which I don't want.
So, I want a fast *VA panel. Great viewing angles and colours, and also fast enough not to ghost during FIFA...:p

Well, you pretty much know what you want...

Look around, read the reviews, and let us know what you've picked and how it all works out!

Good luck! :)

I just got a evga gts512 and love it, I am getting about 5-15 extra fps in crysis compared to the 8800gt it replaced, I returned the GT I got from best buy when I saw this card since I wanted to step up to the G90s in feb-march.

All the talk of the new high end being a SLI solution....will it be a single card like the 7950GX2 or will it force you to have 2 cards and bridge them?

Well obviously this question has now been answered but...
I have another one....

Does anybody know for sure how well the 9800GX2 will scale?

I mean the 7950GX2 was I'd say mediocre at best.
The 3870 X2 has shown so far to scale VERY well @ 80 - 90%
Any idea about the 9800GX2???
