I think a joystick with an adjustable throttle is a must for the helo. Otherwise its just too damn hard to control.

That's what I've been hearing online, the helos are too hard to control w/ just your mouse & K/B 🙁

OMG, just practice. I took a couple of hours of creating my own game with bots and practiced until I could do everything that I wanted. It is not that hard. To me, if you can successfully go under the bridges and steer around in the valleys without crashing you are doing pretty good.

I love Road to Rome just not enough damn servers hosting it anymore and the few that are left usually don't have good pings for me.

Is there an AT members group or Clan server? I got BF for my B-day a few days before Christmas, haven't played online yet.
A single player mode where was sitting at an anti-aircraft battery was very realistic.

I pwn so much on close fire its not even funny. Havent played it lately cuz all it does is crash to desktop, my new rig is almost done so hopefully I acn start playing again.

DC is fun and Ive been in a top clan in CAL and STA but the choppers are so unbalanced its not even funny. Im starting to like regular more because of the balance. Give me my CAR and its over.......

Exactly. Creating LAN or single mission games is the key to learning helicopters fast without being booted for being a noobie. I taught my bro how to fly helos over the break. With about 10 minutes of me telling him what to do and a few hours of practice he's as good as most people I see playing online. I'm so proud of the little tyke. 😱

Tips for flying the helicopter:

Every action should have a reaction in order to return to an equilibrium. If you pivot one way with the strafe keys, you need to counter that pivot and come to a stop using the other direction. If you lean one way to strafe or start forward, you need to counter it so you don't crash.

Hovering is difficult to master, but worth it if you like to carry gunners with you. It's also very useful for taking over outposts.

Plan ahead for taking something out, i.e. line up your shots so you don't end up trying to compensate and then crash. The anti-tank Blackhawk is a good helicopter to learn that skill in because you HAVE to since it's so slow to move.

Use rockets on infantry and light armor, and save the missles for heavy armor (naturally).

Lastly, always wait for a gunner.

ups

I fly helos with my mouse and keyboard... I can do about anything with them, I just played offline for a few hours practicing in both the Hind and Apache... It's easy now.

Damn, I didn't know DC .6 was even out.
I won't play DC again until the BF 1.6 patch with punkbuster comes out.
But DC 0.38 was my favorite. Before they made the choppers useless deathtraps.

Bah, the choppers are the best part. Yes, they take a bit of skill to really utilize, but damn, you can rain death down on the enemy when you get the hang of it. And once you get hovering figured out, claiming points is a breeze
Oh, I can fly the things alright. I was the Apache master in .38. Barrel rolls, forward and backward loops, no problem.
Hovering to take points, no problem.
But then they nerfed them.
How are you supposed to take a point when you die as soon as you get close to the point and try to hover?

On any map with planes, there's no use in even bothering with a chopper. Any plane can take you down in about 2 seconds.
And even on the maps without planes, the chopper is way too vulnerable to the heavy machine guns and the Stingers. Even the good pilots don't last more than a minute or two.

But I haven't tried .6 yet, so I'll have to see what they are like now. Those new choppers look pretty fun.

What is the "SW" mod?

Secret Weapons ... it's an expansion, not a mod.
Thanks, but I was hoping for "it's a Star Wars mod and you can download it here" kind of response.

Actually, there is a star wars mod.
It's called Galactic Conquest.
It's amusing, but gets boring pretty fast.
And not many servers run it.
EDIT: You can download it from here

DC is the best, but the gameplay is still horrendeously unbalanced. I still think BF1942 is the best and can't be beat.

Which version of DC 0.5A or 0.6F brigden?

Fav mod is DC .6, favorite map is El Amien(Sp?)...with the choppers, I use a Saitek Cyborg 3D joystick, I could not imagine flying them without this, or a similar joystick, mouse and keyboard would be next to impossible....the Helos are my fav but they can be taken down very easily and are pretty hard to control, personally I find it to be more realistic this way...great game.

um kill things in or around the point before hovering cuz thats just stupid if you don't......
ive seen good pilots last for 6-10 minutes at a time.....they have to go back and reload/ repair multiple times before they die......and that was in .5

and helis are so much fun but i do think its not balanced with the russian POS heli that is heavy but armed better....and thus sluggish compared to the apache

Yeah, DC is my favorite.

I'm looking forward to a Transformers mod for BF1942 that's in development right now. It seems like it would be pretty tough thing to do. I hope they pull it off.

There is a reason why they have planes on both sides. Any decent player will realize that they dont have control of the air, and try to retake it. Look at your team, see what they do, and go from there.
