Over $4500 for an IBM PC with dual 5.25 floppies and 64K of memory. I paid $800 around the same time for my Epson LQ-800 24pin dot matrix printer (still works to this day and FAR better than an inkjet at text). I upgraded to 256K of memory later on for an astronomical price, but I lost the receipt and don't remember the $ figure. I still use the IBM keyboard from this machine on a daily basis. It is without question the finest keyboard ever made, the nice clickety-clack type. I know people who would trade their first born for one of these KB's ... ;)

Still have a Diamond Stealth 64 w/4MB of VRAM that cost $359 (based on the S3 968 chip). Was the baddest vid card in its time. I keep it around for diagnostics reasons/use.

For a single piece of hardware...$300+ for 4mb of RAM back in the days of my 486sx/33. Math co-processors are overrated, I tell you.

my family upgraded my 486 to a p200mmx box for 500 bucks. I guess we just switched the MOBO, CPU, RAM, and HDD. not sure how much that 486 costed us, probably more

Canadian dollars:
$3000+ for my AST 486DX2-50, 4MB RAM, 257MB Quantum HD, and a crappy AST 14" that nearly killed my eyes for using it at 800x600 @ 60 Hz for a while.

Upgrades to the 486:
$700~$800 for Maxtor 1.6 GB
$500-ish for 8MB FPM SIMM

Then I believe that I spent about $600 to upgrade it to a P166MMX + 64MB PC66 SDRAM.
Then about one year after, I upgraded to a dual Celeron 433 (BP6) with 256MB PC100. Cost me about $700 total.

My current Athlon workstation cost me about $1000 total in January. The Duron server was built from spare parts after selling the BP6 + about $200-ish invested on it.

I spent $200 on a Diamond Viper v550 (TNT 16Mb) soon after it came out just so I could finally play Quake 2. I'm pretty sure thats the most expensive component I have yet to buy.

Then there's the time I spent $60 on a 32Mb stick pf PC66 RAM...

I remember paying a lot for a Packard Hell 386 SUX. I wanted the BIG HD, so I shelled out extra for the 107 MB drive instead of the 83 MB one. The funny thing is, Windows and its other components took up more than 83 MB of the drive, so what did the people with the smaller drive do, operate using DOS only? I remember wiping Windows out and using only DOS so I could have more room.

Get this $4400 hundred, albeit CND, for a P166 non-mmx, 32 meg edo ram, 1.6 gig hd, 17" Syncmaster 17Gli <-----now that is an awesome monitor, still use it for dad's comp. I LOVE IT,
8x cd-rom, upgraded 2 meg cirrus logic vid card soundblaster compatible card (crystal I believe), and hmm, guess that's bout it, oh yea, Microsoft natural keyboard, the original and microsoft mouse. 3.5" floppy obviously, that was back in 95 I believe, I then performed a couple upgrades

32 meg edo ~ $100?
HP 7200i 2x2x6 burner (still workin perfectly by the way after well over 1000, maybe closer to 1500 cd's burned) ~ $500
Creative Riva TNT ~ $100
40x Acer CD-rom ~ $50
Soundblaster 16 ISA ~$70
Maxtor 5400 rpm 8.4 gig hd ~$300-350
and then cable internet $40 a month since 97

By the way, this setup still works flawlessly.
Always has, always will, the vid card is in another computer, and the old 1.6 gig drive finally died after accidentally dropping it, everything still all work :)..

But that burner, ouch!..
