OK, don't laugh. I once paid $600 for a 16MB SIMM and $260 for a 2x CD-ROM. Then there was tax on top of this. This was in 94 and these were Canadian dollers.

I paid $429 for a DVD kit when they first came out. It came with a 2X Toshiba DVD-Rom and a Hollywood Decoder card. Damn I feel stupid. :(

The most expensive part I've ever bought was a Seagate X15, but I never used it. I sold it before it even arrived. :(

The most expensive part that I actually used was a P3 700e guaranteed to 933 @ default voltage.

Cost me $300, but it was worth it.

My dad bought a 28.8 modem like ten years ago for $700, I think. Don't remember the exact year or price, I'll have to ask him later. I also remember going to get a CD-ROM for like $300 with him. (CDN $). He also had the "first" personal computer, I'll have to ask him how much that cost.

Hmmm, I've always pretty much gone for the value solution... the most I've ever spent on an individual component was about $275 for my current monitor. Cable modem access @ $480/year is currently the most expensive aspect of my PC.

I paid $2000 for my first computer, Apple II+, 48K Ram, single 146k floppy drive and a Epson MX70 printer, 7pin print head, no true decenders ie lower case y, p, q did not go below the line. There was one dot difference between a lower case s and g.

Edit:
Oh yeah: how about $175 for a 1200baud modem.

$8/meg for SIMM, $150 for a 14.4K modem, $150 for 16bit Soundblaster

$1300 for a 486 DX/33 240MB HD plus another $250 for 14" VGA monitor. hahahah..... man, what a waste of money back then.

This was in 93

I just spent $300 on a 6 bay Lian Li case. I have purchased pc items that have cost more, but that was the one that made me say 'ouch, its a case, a GREAT case but still its a case'

I heard when hard drives first came out if you wanted one you would pay $3000 for a 5mb drive.
Now you can get an 80gb hard drive for less than $200.

Close to $200 for a 1x CD-ROM when the first came out (you had to push the tray in to release it... there was no motor, just spring loaded)

Monitor: 350$

The one that makes me feel the worse is my 800mhz Slot-A Athlon: 320$. That probably buys 2 1.2ghz T-Birds now...

Cyrix 300
64MB
6 GB
15" monitor
you get the point...

$850 for my 19" Hitachi 751. Steep but the best damn monitor I've ever seen AND I've had it for 3 years. ZERO regrets!

Things that make me shake my head:
 • RAM:
 • $320 for 64MB of EDO RAM in '97. ($5/MB was great then!)
 • $175 for 128MB PC100 (mid-'98)
 • $110 for 128MB PC133 (mid-'00)
 • $90 for 256MB PC133 (4 months ago)
 • Just got an email offering 2-256MB sticks of PC133 for $100. Sheesh.
 • HARD DRIVES:
 • $230 - 5.1GB WD 5400RPM - Jan. '98
 • $200 - 8.4GB WD 5400RPM - Sept. '98
 • $200 - 20GB Maxtor 7200RPM - Sept. '99
 • $250 - 40GB Maxtor 7200RPM - April. '00
 • $200 - 30GB Maxtor 7200RPM - June. '00
 • $120 - 40GB Maxtor 7200RPM - June '01 (less than half the price in 14 months!)
 • CD BURNERS:
 • $200 - Acer 2/2/6 - Jan. '99
 • $250 - Acer 8/4/32 - Jan. '00
 • $180 - TDK 12/10/32 - Dec. '01
 • VIDEO CARDS:
 • $80 - ATI Rage II 4MB - Jan. '98
 • $130 - used Voodoo 1 4MB- Mar. '98
 • $180 - new Voodoo 2 8MB - July '98
 • $200 - TNT 16MB - Sept. '98
 • $200 - TNT2U 16MB - July '99
 • $250 - GeForce DDR 32MB - Dec. '99
 • $320 - GeForce2 GTS 32MB - Apr. '00
There seems to be a pattern here:p, but WTF aren't video cards coming down like RAM and HDs?!?

The worst part is I can't GIVE AWAY the old stuff, much less get any $$$ for them.:(

When the ATA66 format first came out I jumped the bangwagon and bought the biggest and fastest drive at the time which was an 18GB western digital 7200RPM ATA66 drive... it sure did break the bank at a whooping $520 price tag! I don't know what I was thinking! Man that sucker dropped right down to about $200 in a matter of several weeks! Boy does it hurt to see depreciation in action :(
