I'm looking for a new hard drive for a freind.. it's s toss up between Maxtor and the IBM's.. I think he's under the impression that Maxtor is suck.. so what's the deal? I have a 30 gig diamond max.. but he knows that and he might think that I'm biased.. plan on printing this out for him to prove him otherwise.. I know that IBM's are great too.. maybe better.. but let me know what you've got and why you like it.. thanks.

please vote in the poll.. thanks.

There the same just about. The Maxtor will save you some dough. But there almost identical. Some people swear by IBM's and some people swear my Maxtors. Your pick. I would get the Maxtor just becuase I can pick them up locally for a good price. But probably if I were ordering I would get the IBM. There both great drives though.

I'd go with an IBM (Or if you want slightly cheaper, but basicly the same drive technology a Western Digital). Ive had good experiences with both IBM and Western Digital drives but horrible experiences with Maxtors. I had two of them and they both died within 6 months of purchase...they're cheap, but for a reason :(

I've got a Maxtor, and it runs beautifully. If you have the $$$ go with the IBM, but if you're a little strapped for cash, go for the maxtor. I got my Maxtor 30 GB 7200 for about $100 plus tax after a rebate from staples.

i wouldn't be any of the ones u listed..but of the ones u did, i voted IBM...due to performance.

Fujitsu MPG 7200 series HDD w/ 20GB PLATTER...

now u tell me which drive peforms better - the Fujitsu actually beats the 75GXP is numerous benchmarks, and is quiter (fluid dynamic bearing instead of ball bearing)...apparently, better protection against shock as well...

my 20GB fujitsu MPF is unheard of (literally)...quiet...and was cheap, tho not a stellar performer...

i hate LOUD computers

Either Maxtor or IBM will give you plenty of loyal service. Just pick the one that happens to be the best deal, at the time of purchase.

I have 2 75GXP IBM's and they're great. I've used many Maxtors in the past, and I love them. Either are a good choice. Western Digital is a brand to stay away from. They suck hardcore.

You cant get much better than IBM when it comes to IDE. Although I know a lot of people that swear by maxtor, I on the other hand I tend to buy western digital drives.(witch are made by IBM) I have been using them for years, and havent had a problem. Not to mention the fact that you can pick up a 20g for around 100 bucks oem.

WD uses the same parts as IBM and actually has an agreement with IBM for technology and parts. They are pretty much identical. To use an analogy - IBM would be the retail box, WD would be the white box. Maxtor is cheap for a reason, they are not as good. My old maxtor(came with comp) died in a year, replaced it a WD and it has been running smooth for about 4 years now.

Benchmark numbers are different for the WD vs. IBM....not the same drive!
