A friend is selling a Honda Accord 1991 EX Standard transmission for $1600 US. His dad is saying to let it go for $1300 and he's offering to sell it to me for $950 in June if it isn't sold by then.

Now, I used to think that would be a damn good price, till I found out more about the condition of the car and till I had a talk with my dad.

The car has 190 000 miles on it. The clutch has never been changed, and the engine was rebuilt at 95 000 miles after an accident. There are some rust problems on the body and worse, the car eats oil. A couple gaskets had to be changed, and a couple of spark plugs had to be changed too because oil was leaking from them. What's that you say, oil leaking from spark plugs? It turns out that that could be caused by bad piston rings or a cut in the cylinder wall. The car makes a noise in the engine when it is moving. My friend says "That's a noise that honda engines make" but I don't buy it. It's hard to describe the noise, its like a knocking noise or something.

Anyway, with all this in mind my dad says I shouldn't put more than $320 into the car. And to think I would have put almost $1000 into what I thought was a "damn good deal" at the time. I don't know.. I think $320 may be underpricing it a little and he might just sell it to someone else but I dunno.. I'm no mechanic. What do you think this car is worth?

I give it a $300 or less for a few reasons:
1) very high mileage
2) Original clutch is probably due to be replaced
3) Car was in an accident
4) All the other problems
5) Knocking sound: Honda engines do sound different from other cars, but there shouldn't be a knock or a tap. Probably is related to the OTHER engine problems.

Anyway, you're going to have to invest way more than the car is worth in keeping it driveable....

The thing is, Edmunds TMV values the car at $1200 US even for "Rough condition". So I dunno..

why would you want to pay for a POS car to take up your driveway?

why? Because I want a car to learn manual on, and my friend offered to sell it. I just want to know what price is a fair price to pay...

Oh....just about any car is good to learn manual on. You definitely don't want one that you are going to have to put a car-payment's worth of cash every month just to get it out of the repair shop. You should be able to find a car in much better shape for $1000.

lol, well I talked to my friend and he's like "I thought it was the spark plugs, but its just the two gaskets." and he thinks that the BODY (the car without the engine) could sell for $1000! lol...

I second that. You will put at least $2000 into this car by the time you get it into decent shape, and even then you will know it's been driven for a long time with problems (which is hard on the car), and has been in a major accident. Stay away, period.

This car has been poorly maintained. Let your friend's dad sell it to someone else. Beleive me, it's not worth the trouble. What is your friend thinking anyone would buy a rusty 11 year old Accord body for $1000 for anyway?

Find a nice high mileage Accord for $1000. All you need to do is look at the ones listed in the paper. Trust me, you'll definitely find one by June if you're serious about looking. And don't restrict your search to only Accords. There will be lots of decent $1000 cars listed in the paper between now and June.

I'd say that the real "TMV" is more like $400, which is incidentally, very close to the Edmund's trade-in value of $382 (for my zip code).
