I have had the pleasure of being driven recently in a BMW (by dad bought one for a short time to cover him between company cars).
Never been in a RWD car before that, always front/AWD.
There's quite a difference in feeling, you can feel you are getting pushed from behind rather than pulled from the front.
Personally I have noly driven FWD cars, so I don't know what it's like from a drivers perspective.

What do you guys prefer? FWD/RWD or AWD? (From a handling perspective, not a mfr perspective, obviously BMW's are all RWD, so just liking them isn't a reason to vote for RWD)
 
I've only driven RWD a few times, and not hard enough to notice much of a difference from my FWD car. I don't like understeering accelerating out of a turn, though..so I'd probably prefer AWD/RWD..
 
AWD! Of course, I go to college in Rochester. Have to have a AWD-designed car because I go to Buffalo sometimes. 🙁
 
FWD is certainly the economical solution to good traction, especially in the snow. Perhaps the exception to that would be a Subaru, but I've never driven one so I wouldn't say for sure if it's great in the snow or not. I would expect they would do pretty well.

My S-10 truck is probably the worst thing I've ever driven in winter conditions. It's not 4x4, and it's fairly lightweight. Like driving a sled - you just kinda slide along.

you know toyota is making the world's most boring cars by a long shot when they are even less fun than an old volvo. i would consider old volvos to be some of the least fun vehicles out there, RWD or not.

honestly, this question is pointless without context. for the most fun, RWD wins, because of all that tail-out action. for best all-weather safety, AWD wins for obvious reasons. for daily drivers, FWD wins, because it's nearly impossible to surprise yourself with it, and it's cheap and efficient.

Volvos are the ultimate field beaters.
 
Considering my experience with each is spread across very, very different kinds of vehicles, it'd be hard for me to make a fair judgement. FWD in my Mazda3, AWD in a Toyota RAV4, both RWD and AWD in a Suburban, and RWD in a BMW 530i and a Mercedes SL500. The overall driving experience in each car was affected by a lot more than just which wheels were moving me around.

That said, RWD kicks ass.

And that said, I'd never get anything but FWD or AWD for a daily driver in PA. 😛
